Abstract Glass-beads (diam. = 250 µm) were buried 10 cm deep in the sediment of a stream. After an exposure of eight weeks, bacterial densities on the beads varied between 2.7 × 105 and 2.4 × 107/cm2, and the length of the fungal mycelium between 0.2 and 5.3 mm/cm2. Bacterial densities did not show any correlation with the DOC content of the water, but were positively correlated with respiration on the beads. Fungal mycelium was negatively correlated with water temperature. Acid hydrolysis of stream-exposed beads released sugars and amino acids, whose combined carbon content exceeded that of the microbial cells by a factor of at least 4. Gut extracts of Gammarus tigrinus and Tipula caloptera released amino acids and sugars from stream-exposed beads.

[Auszug] The radio source 1107+036 was reported by Munro9 and has been identified with a nearby blue galaxy of 17 mag10 (for reasons explained below) rather than with the NSO of 19 mag noted to the west and closer to the radio position. Figure 1 is an enlargement of a section of prints from the National ...

[Auszug] All three sources occur in two sections of the Molonglo catalogue survey currently being prepared for publication (J. M. Sutton, I. M. Davies, A. G. Little and H. S. M., unpublished). These cover declination strips approximately 2 wide, centred on +11.2 and +16.5 declination. The sources in this ...

[Auszug] The Molonglo telescope is a transit instrument with 1.1 simultaneous beams in declination covering a strip of sky 15' wide. Because of the large uncertainty in the position of the source available to us at the time, several nights were required to map the area. By the time we became aware of a ...

Abstract Complex velocity structure is revealed in several absorption systems in the spectrum of 0215+015 (z=1.715) at resolutions of 20–30 km s−1 FWHM. Striking differences are found in the relative strengths of low to high ions among the components, reinforcing our interpretation of these systems as intervening galaxies.

Abstract The spectrum of the highest redshift QSO 2000−330 (z=3.78) contains four heavy-element absorption systems withz abs〉3.0. Interesting features include velocity structure atz abs=3.552 which suggests a cluster origin and a purely low ionization system atz abs=3.1881 typical of a galactic disk sightline.

[Auszug] BEICHMAN et al.1 and Bregman et al.2 present interesting IR and high-frequency radio (4.8-14.5 GHz) results on 1413 + 135. The latter also give an optical spectrum which suggests that it is a galaxy of redshift z =0.26; no emission features were seen. Curiously Beichman et al.1 imply that it was an ...

[Auszug] Hoskins et al.1 have produced a list of sources containing radio positions determined at 408 MHz together with the positions of nearby optical objects. The radio positions have an accuracy of about 5 arc sec r.m.s. The optical positions were obtained from the Palomar Sky Survey prints, using the ...

A general method for the synthesis of π-allyl-iron-tricarbonyl halides, enabling the preparation of the parent π-allyl complexes and also of π-allyl complexes with functional groups attached to the allyl ligand, is described. The method is equally applicable to the preparation of the chlorides, bromides and iodides. A series of such compounds have been prepared, and their physical properties and structures are discussed.

    Notes:
From theoretical considerations, it can be predicted that electron-withdrawing substituents on an olefin will stabilize the π-bond formed by the latter with zerovalent transition metals in complexes such as π-olefin iron tetracarbonyl. In agreement with this iron tetracarbonyl complexes have been prepared with ligands such as maleic, fumaric, citraconic, acrylic, methacrylic and cinnarnic acids and their derivatives. The structures of these compounds have been confirmed by analytical, IR and NMR data.

The reactions of allylic diols or allylic chloro-alcohols with di-iron-enneacarbonyl give, by elimination of water or HCL, π-allyl-acyl-iron-tricarbonyl complexes. The structures of these products are discussed on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical studies.

The preparation of two new π-olefin complexes, butadiene iron tetracarbonyl and butadiene di-iron octacarbonyl, is described and their structures are discussed. Butadiene iron tetracarbonyl adds hydrogen chloride with formation of an unstable cationic complex which decomposes easily, especially in polar solvents, with formation of π-methallyl iron tricarbonyl chloride.

    Notes:
The reductive dehalogenation of halo-π-allyl-tricarbonyliron complexes affords bis-(π-allyl-tricarbonyliron) which coexists in solution with the paramagnetic π-allyl-tricarbonyliron. Similar paramagnetic complexes have also been obtained with substituted π-ally1 ligands and also with both one or two of the carbonyl groups replaced by t-phosphines. The elucidation of the structure of these products, based on analytical, electron spin resonance, and infrared data, is discussed.

The reactions of ethylene and hexatriene with di-iron enneacarbonyl give π-ethylene iron tetracarbonyl, and π-hexatriene iron tricarbonyl, π-hexatriene di-iron octacarbonyl, π-hexatriene di-iron heptacarbonyl, and π-hexatriene iron tetracarbonyl respectively. The compounds with the exception of the latter were isolated and characterised. Their structures are discussed on the basis of Ir.-, NMR.- and dipole moment data.
