Published 1993Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Instability in the output of dc-biased surface emitting lasers due to an external cavity effect was observed. The output power spectrum exhibited multiple peaks with spacing corresponding to exactly the round-trip delay in silica fibers with length ranging from 2 m to 2 km. The magnitude of the peaks was enhanced in the spectral region centered at the laser relaxation frequency. With increased feedback, the background of the output spectrum was found to increase, indicating the presence of optical chaos. Numerical simulation based on the rate equation analysis was found to agree with the experiment, indicating the surface emitting lasers are well described by the rate equation and are susceptible to feedback as the edge emitting lasers.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The dependence of VS on T and I can be explained by a modification the theory of M. Hecht [Phys. Rev. B 41, 7918 (1990)] yielding a value of VF=0.73±0.02 V. The effect of metal coverage is to reduce the influence of VS.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Results of photoconductivity measurements in undoped n-type and Se-doped GaN epitaxial thin films are presented. Similar to the photoluminescence spectra, the photoconductivity also shows a broad yellow band centered around 2.2 eV. It is found that persistent photoconductivity (PPC) does exist in all the studied thin films. In addition, the PPC effects can be observed for the pumping photon energy down to the yellow band. The results reveal that the origin of the PPC effect and yellow luminescence may arise from the same intrinsic defect. It is shown that the most probable candidate of the intrinsic defect is nitrogen antisite. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2559Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Aims : To analyse annexin I expression in prostatic carcinoma. Annexin I belongs to a family of structurally related calcium and phospholipid-binding proteins implicated in signal transduction, DNA replication, cell proliferation and apoptosis. The decreased expression of annexin I, II and VII proteins has been reported in different types of cancer. Methods and results : Using immunohistochemistry, we analysed annexin I expression in 77 cases of prostatic adenocarcinoma (Gleason score 6, N = 40; Gleason scores 7–8, N = 27; and Gleason scores 9–10, N = 10) and high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN, N = 50). Immunoreactivity of annexin I in tumour cells was evaluated as negative (〈 5% of cells), focally positive (5–25% of cells) or positive (〉 25% of cells). In contrast to positive staining in adjacent benign prostatic epithelium, annexin I expression was decreased (focally positive) in 76% of cases of high-grade PIN (P 〈 0.0001) and was decreased or absent in 81% of prostatic adenocarcinomas (P 〈 0.0001). Annexin I expression in all higher grade tumours (Gleason scores 7–10) was only focally positive or absent. Conclusions : Expression of annexin I inversely correlates with the increasing histological grade of prostatic adenocarcinoma. By showing a progressive loss of annexin I expression in high-grade PIN, intermediate-grade and high-grade cancer, our findings suggest that the loss of annexin I expression occurs early in prostatic tumorigenesis and becomes more prominent throughout tumour progression. The loss of expression of annexin I may serve as a useful marker of prostate cancer development and progression.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2005Staff ViewISSN: 1365-3040Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: Two genes with a common region that is characteristic of the TPSI1/Mt4 family were cloned from a Pi-starvation-induced cDNA library of rice roots using suppression subtracted hybridization (SSH). Based on the consensus sequence of these two genes, members of the TPSI1/Mt4 family were found in maize, wheat and barley. blast and a cluster analysis in the eight members of the TPSI1/Mt4 family showed two classes of four genes each among monocots. The first gene from rice was designated OsIPS1 based on a comparison of the consensus sequence with AtIPS1, and consequently the second gene, which has been previously reported as OsPI1, was designated OsIPS2. Accumulation of the mRNA of OsIPS1/2 was examined by northern blotting and quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction in whole-root and split-root experiments under treatment with phosphate (Pi) and the Pi analogue phosphite (Phi). OsIPS1 showed much higher mRNA accumulation in roots than OsIPS2, and an opposite trend was seen in shoots. OsIPS1/2 showed both systemic and local responses to Pi starvation, and less than 10% of the overall induced mRNA level was due to the local Pi concentration in roots. The results indicate that Phi may interfere with earlier events in roots that are associated with a local Pi signalling pathway. An analysis of transgenic plants showed that OsIPS1/2 are independently responsive to Pi signalling and are mainly expressed in lateral roots and in the vascular cylinder in the primary root. Exogenous cytokinin (6-BA) almost completely suppressed systemic Pi starvation signalling and partially suppressed local Pi signalling. Exogenous abscisic acid remarkably reduced Pi starvation signalling. In contrast, exogenous auxin enhanced Pi signalling, especially local Pi signalling in roots. Exogenous ethylene (ethyphon) and the ratio of auxin to cytokinins did not appear to affect the expression of these two genes.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The highest H2S content was obtained for the cooked mixture containing a natural yolk to albumen ratio. The alteration of yolk to albumen ratio resulted in an alteration of pH for the mixtures and decreased the H2S content of the cooked products. The addition of acetic acid, citric acid, Na2EDTA, and polyphosphates at 0.1% or malic acid, monosodium phosphate, sorbic acid, succinic acid, and tartaric acid at 0.5% to the raw mixture reduced the H2S content of the cooked samples.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
