A typical superconducting BKBO thin film on the SrTiO3 and MgO substrates had a very sharp zero resistance transition at a temperature of 22–24 K as measured by transport four point and mutual inductance probes. The normal state resistivity exhibited metallic to semiconductive characteristics depending on film composition with the lowest room temperature resistivity of about 0.25 mΩ cm. The film orientation was highly epitaxial to both SrTiO3 and MgO substrates. Normal metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) type tunnel functions with native insulator layer and deposited MgO layer were reproducibly fabricated. The superconducting energy gap of about 3.6 meV was obtained from those NIS junctions. Heteroepitaxial superconductor- insulator-superconductor (SIS) trilayer junctions were also fabricated using MgO insulator layers. For a 5 nm thick insulator layer, quasiparticle SIS tunnel junctions with nonhysteric I-V characteristics were obtained. By reducing MgO insulator layer thickness down to 3 nm, SIS tunnel junctions with Josephson supercurrent were obtained with hysteric I-V characteristics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1996Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: A significant charge transfer, which differs from tunneling, over thick AlxGa1−xAs barrier in GaAs/AlxGa1−xAs asymmetric double quantum wells is studied by cw photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and time-resolved photoluminescence. It is found that 300-A(ring)-thick Al0.3Ga0.7As barrier is universally "leaky'' with transport time of ∼300 ps, while AlAs and AlAs/GaAs digital alloy barriers with same thickness are not. Aided by a model calculation, we suggest that the intrinsic inhomogeneities in the alloy, which recent x-ray and scanning tunneling microscope studies revealed, may be responsible. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The quantized PLE peaks and their submonolayer shifts clearly show that the heterointerface of thin QWs prepared by growth-interrupted molecular beam epitaxy has islands which extend out a lateral dimension larger than 100 A(ring), but they themselves have the microroughness smaller than 30 A(ring). The result of this work using exciton as the probe provides a clear evidence supporting the bimodal roughness model. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The arbiter is based on a pair of quantum flux parametrons, which are single flux quantum switching devices, and is hence called a BiQFP for Bi-quantum Flux Parametron. High-speed experiments have demonstrated a rms single-shot time jitter of ±200–300 fs.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We have investigated the optical and structural properties of high-quality ZnO films grown on epitaxial GaN (epi-GaN) by plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy employing low-temperature buffer layers. High-resolution x-ray diffraction for both symmetric and asymmetric reflexes shows that crystalline defects in ZnO films have a similarity to epi-GaN used as a substrate. The quality of ZnO epilayers grown on epi-GaN is basically determined by epi-GaN. The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum at 10 K exhibits very sharp exciton emission with a linewidth of 1.5 meV, while deep-level emission is negligible, indicative of small residual strain. At 77 K, PL is dominated by a free-exciton emission line in the low-excitation regime, while it is overtaken by a new emission band due to biexcitons at its low-energy side as the excitation intensity increases. This biexciton emission band emerges even under the intermediate excitation regime of 100 W/cm2, which is 100 times smaller than the previously reported threshold for bulk ZnO. The biexciton binding energy is estimated to be 15 meV, in agreement with previous results. At the higher excitation regime, the emission line due to exciton–exciton scattering dominates the PL spectrum. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
