Published 1989Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Significantly improved spatial uniformity of bremsstrahlung radiation, relative to a planar-anode diode, is obtained on the 3-MV, 150-kA HELIA accelerator when a Bθ lens diode is used to actively control the high-power electron beam at the exit of a coaxial, magnetically insulated transmission line. The advantage of this diode over other diodes which only passively control the beam is that better radiation uniformity for less beam loss is possible. Published 1988Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The impedance of a diode having an annular cathode and indented anode that terminates a coaxial MITL (magnetically insulated transmission line) is measured and compared with a semiempirical model developed from calculations made using the magic code. The measurements were made on the 16-Ω electron accelerator HELIA (high-energy linear induction accelerator) operating at 3 MV. The model agrees with the measurements within the 10% measuring error and shows that the diode operates in either a load- or line-dominated regime depending on AK (anode-cathode) gap spacing. In the load-dominated regime, which corresponds to small AK gaps, the diode impedance is controlled by an effective anode-cathode gap, and the flow is approximately axial. In the line-dominated regime, which corresponds to large AK gaps, the impedance is independent of the AK gap and corresponds to the impedance associated with the minimum current solution of the MITL, with the flow becoming more radial as the AK gap is increased.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC) has been known to facilitate the recruitment, activation and development of Th2 polarized cells, leading investigators to suggest a role for TARC in the development of Th2 responses.Objective To gain a better understanding of the role of TARC in the pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis we investigated the cellular sources of this chemokine in nasal mucosa. In addition, the effect of cytokines on TARC production has been investigated.Methods The expression of TARC in human nasal mucosa was assessed by immunohistochemistry. To study the effect of cytokines on TARC production, epithelial cells, endothelial cells and fibroblasts, isolated from inferior nasal mucosa samples, were stimulated by a variety of cytokines including IL-4, IL-13, tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interferon (IFN)-γ.Results Epithelial cells in nasal mucosa in subjects with allergic rhinitis expressed higher signal level than those in non-allergy patients. Combined stimulation with IL-4 and TNF-α, as well as IL-13 and TNF-α, synergistically induced TARC expression in epithelial cells. Furthermore, the amount of TARC induced by these cytokines was higher in epithelial cells obtained from patients with allergic rhinitis than in those from non-allergic patients.Conclusion These results demonstrate a crucial role of nasal epithelial cells in the expression of TARC, and that Th2 cytokine IL-4 and IL-13 may promote Th2 responses by inducing TARC production from epithelial cells.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

To elucidate whether the expression of nm23 gene product in malignant melanoma is also inversely correlated with metastatic potential, conventional prognostic parameters or the tumour suppressor protein p53, immunohistochemical studies using a monoclonal antibody against nm23-H1 protein were performed on 138 benign and malignant melanocytic tumours. The expression of nm23 protein was compared with that of p53 protein and conventional clinicopathological prognostic factors. The nm23 protein level in benign melanocytes and metastatic melanoma cells was also studied by Western blot analysis. No significant difference regarding the protein was observed between naevi and melanomas, either at histological or protein levels. The expression correlated with local recurrence within 1 year after surgery, level of invasion and tumour thickness, but no parallels were observed between the nm23 and p53 proteins, suggesting that gene is regulated by independent mechanisms, although located on the same chromosome. There was no inverse correlation between the nm23 protein and melanoma metastasis which suggested that the nm23 protein does not appear to be lost during melanoma metastasis.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

In normal skin, SCF was mainly observed in endothelial cells of blood vessels but not frequently in basal melanocytes, whereas c-KIT was predominantly localised in tissue mast cells. In benign neoplastic melanocytes (common melanocytic naevi), localisation of SCF and c-KIT was complementary: SCF was mostly found in dermal naevus cells while c-KIT was revealed in epidermal naevus cells, although the expression of the latter antigen was not frequent. Malignant melanoma cells showed less frequent expression of these antigens than those in benign lesions. Of five cultured melanoma cell lines, SCF was observed in only one, and c-KIT was not found in any melanoma cells. No quantitative or qualitative alterations assessed by Western blot analysis were induced in the presence of phenotypic modifiers (sodium butyrate and HMBA). Present data suggest that loss of SCF expression in neoplastic melanocytes is commonly associated with malignant transformation of pigment cells rather than loss of its receptor c-KIT.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) cured by diamino diphenyl sulphone (DDS) was used as the base resin. Polyethersulphone (PES) was used as the thermoplastic modifier. Fracture toughness and shear ductility tests were performed to characterize the materials. The fracture toughness of the DDS-cured epoxy was not enhanced by simply adding PES. However, in the presence of rubber particles as a third component, the toughness of the PES–rubber-modified epoxy was found to improve with increasing PES content. The toughening mechanisms were determined to be rubber cavitation, followed by plastic deformation of the matrix resin. It was also determined, through uniaxial compression tests, that the shear ductility of the DDS-cured epoxy was enhanced by the incorporation of PES. These results imply that the intrinsic ductility, which had been enhanced by the PES addition, was only activated under the stress state change due to the cavitation of the rubber particles. The availability of increasing matrix ductility seems to be responsible for the increase in toughness.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
