Abstract: A new neutron-deficient berkelium isotope 241Bk produced in the 239Pu(6Li, 4n) reaction has been identified using a gas-jet coupled on-line isotope separator. Cm K and L X-rays associated with the EC decay of 241Bk were observed in the mass-241 fraction, and three γ transitions were attributed to the EC decay of 241Bk through X-γ coincidences. The half-life of 241Bk was determined to be 4.6±0.4 min which is 1/2-1/4 of that of theoretical predictions. The half-life value and the observed γ transitions can be consistently explained as a consequence of the allowed EC transition of π7/2+[633] → ν7/2+[624].

Abstract: The new neutron-deficient americium isotope 233Am produced via the 233U( 6Li, 6n) reaction has been identified using the JAERI on-line isotope separator (JAERI-ISOL) coupled to a gas-jet transport system. The α-decay of 233Am and its subsequent α-decay chain have been observed in the mass-233 fraction. The half-life and α-particle energy of 233Am have been determined to be 3.2±0.8 min and 6780±17 keV, respectively. From these results and a deduced α-decay branching ratio, the observed α-decay is regarded as a favored transition.

Abstract The recoil properties of 26 radionuclides produced in the photonuclear reactions on Cu at bremsstrahlung end-point energies (E 0) of 250 to 1000 MeV have been investigated using the thick-target thick-catcher method. Kinematic properties of the product nuclei were calculated by the two-step vector velocity model. The calculated mean kinetic energies,T, of product nuclei increase with increase of the mass difference between products and target, reflecting the resonance natures and absorption mechanisms. TheT atE 0≥600 MeV were well reproduced by a calculation performed by PICA code byGabriel andAlsmiller atE 0=400 MeV, except for (γ,xn) products by giant-resonance.

Abstract The effect of following interferences was quantitatively assessed in terms of interference factor by irradiating samples together with highly pure reagents at two reactor sites of diferent neutron spectra and fluxes for neutron activation analysis (NAA) and an electron LINAC for photon activation analysis (PAA). The interfering reactions studied are 91) fast neutron-induced reactions, (2) uranium fission (3) (n,γ) reactions of other target elements in NAA, and (4) reactions induced by secondary neutrons in PAA. Corrections for these interferences were successfully applied to the activation analysis of some geological reference rock samples and biological samples.

Abstract Iodine, thallium and uranium were determined by photon activation analysis. Two electron linear accelerators were used for the analysis of several kinds of environmental, biological and geochemical reference materials under different irradiation conditions. Both analytical results for iodine were in good agreement with each other but not with literature values in the case of environmental samples. The results of thallium and uranium agreed well with their reference values. The detectable concentration levels of iodine, thallium and uranium were almost 0.3μg/g.
