The apparatus includes a simple high-temperature heatpipe furnace, an MKS Instruments Baratron, a hydrogen discharge lamp, and an optical detecting system. The heatpipe furnace provides an absorbing medium with a steady total pressure in a closed system so that the column density can be obtained using the ideal gas relation. The apparatus is designed for a working temperature range below 1000 K and a pressure range up to 10 Torr. Encountered experimental difficulties and their found solutions will be discussed in detail. In this work, the absolute photoabsorption cross section of Mg is measured near the 3s threshold using this apparatus. The absolute photoabsorption cross section result at the 3s threshold, which is 2.1±0.3 Mb, is in good agreement with hook method data (2.36 Mb). © 2000 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The radiation is strongly enhanced when the lithium vapor in a heat pipe is optically pumped with a pulsed dye laser with the output wavelength tuned to near the Li 2s–4s two-photon resonance transition. The diffuse violet band can probably be assigned to a recently reported triplet bound-free (23 Π g →a 3 Σ u + ) transition. It is found that the productions of the molecular diffuse band are contributed from Li atoms as well as Li2 molecules. The excitation functions and their dependence on laser power density are presented and the mechanisms for producing the diffuse bands are discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Fixed wavelength ultraviolet emissions at 280 nm and 298 nm are observed for the first time and can be explained by anti-Stokes Raman scattering and two photon emission respectively. In addition, there are tunable emission lines around 280 nm and 298 nm, the frequencies of which vary with pump laser wavelength. These tunable lines can be explained by four-wave mixing schemes.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The densification behaviour and the microstructural evolution of the nickel coated alumina powder during sintering are investigated. The strength and the toughness of the resulting Al2O3/Ni composites are determined. As the nickel content is less than 13 vol%, fully dense composites can be prepared by pressureless sintering. The matrix grain size decreases as nickel inclusions are added. The strength and the toughness of alumina can be increased by 23 and 42% by adding 5 and 8vol% nickel, respectively. The toughening effect is attributed to plastic deformation of ductile inclusions and crack deflection by the inclusions. The strengthening effect is attributed to microstructural refinement.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
