    Description / Table of Contents:
Abstract Analyses for the following elements were made on 118 samples of pore water and 23 samples of sea water from the radiolarian ooze area of the Central Pacific: Na, Ca, Br, Sr (major elements) and Sc, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Rb, Ag, Sb, Cs, Eu, Ta, Hg, U. The average concentration of most of the elements analyzed is higher in the pore water than in the sea water. The enrichment of elements in both the pore water and the bottom near sea water relative to the average composition of the sea water depends on the residence times of the elements in the sea water — the shorter the residence time the greater the enrichment. The enrichment of an element in these sea and pore waters is also dependant on the chemical species in which it occurs in the sea water. The enrichment seems to be greater for hydroxides, less for complex chloride ions and there is no enrichment for simple ions. The enrichment of the elements occuring as hydroxides (Fe, Cu, Cr, Sc, Eu) or complex chlorides (Mn, Ni, Co, Zn, Ag, Hg, Se) results in precipitation from the sea water, which contributes to the growth of the manganese nodules as well as to the genesis of metalliferous sediments in this area. The greater enrichment in the pore water relative to the sea water accounts for the remobilization of these elements from the sediment as the main source of the material for the growth of the manganese nodules.
    Abstract:

Summary The spot test for phosphate developed byFeigl was modified by the use of ascorbic acid as the reducing agent; a field method results. In accord with the ease of conducting this test and its rapidity, and sensitivity, it has proved useful for the study of boring profiles with respect to their enhanced phosphate contents in prehistoric settlement strata.
    Abstract:

Abstract The advantages of laser welding are high process velocity, the possibility to joint alloys, which are not solderable, and the high bonding strength. During the laser welding process a high energy input in a very short time and a small area is performed, resulting in possible changes of structure and composition. Direct information of the change of the electrochemical behaviour of dental alloys after Laser welding procedure does not exist. The aim of this work was, therefore, to assess the electrochemical behaviour of laser welded joints in comparison with the bulk material using the mini-cell system. The logI vs. E curves performed on the bulk material show a complete change concerning the characteristic data, the shape and the position in comparison to such curves measured on the laser track. The characterisation of the electrochemical behaviour of laser welding tracks seems to be very easy by using the mini-cell system.

Abstract Quaternary benzophenanthridine alkaloids (sanguinarine, chelerythrine, chelirubine, chelilutine and macarpine) are specifically induced by cell wall components of Penicillium and Saccharomyces in a colorless strain of Eschscholtzia californica cell suspension cultures. Classical elicitors such as the Phytophthora megasperma elicitor are inactive. The alkaloid synthesis is, however, strongly induced by certain polypeptide antibiotics. Out of 190 tested plant species the yeast elicitor provoked benzophenanthridine synthesis in 13 cultures. One of the branch point enzymes, namely the berberine bridge enzyme, catalysing the formation of (S)-scoulerine from (S)-reticuline, is strongly stimulated during the elicitation process. These results clearly demonstrate the induction of the benzophenanthridine biosynthetic pathway by microbial elicitors.

    Description / Table of Contents:

The macrophage-slowing-factor—produced by the patients lymphocytes after stimulation with myelin basic protein or similar antigens—inhibits the electrophoretic mobility of macrophages ascertained by the cytopherometer. To point out the value of the method, the lymphocytes of 25 patients with various neurologic diseases were examined. The results showed that during all stages and forms of multiple sclerosis there appeared a distinct inhibition in the MEM-test. Besides the diseases on the base of a delayed hypersonsitivity there were also positive results (〉10% inhibition) with the blood-lymphocytes from patients with malignant neoplasm. The detection of malignant tumours in the central nervous system of different kind and localization—like the 39 gynaecological carcinoma comparatively studied—also showed a significant reduction of the macrophage mobility. The diagnostic value of the method is discussed especially with reference to neuroimmunologic diseases and brain-tumours and also to the further possibilities of differentiation.

Abstract Within the pre-alpidic consolidated Serbo-Macedonian Massif several paleogene hydrothermally altered porphyritic stocks have been found and investigated. The subvolcanic activity was ascertained to be confined to three main centers. Hydrothermal alterations within the stocks and as haloes in the surrounding country rock are widespread, the phyllic and the propylitic alteration facies being predominant, whereas the potassic facies seems to be lacking. Geochemical investigations in the Krousia Mountains and in the Eastern Chalkidiki traced in some of the altered stocks and alteration haloes a sulfide mineralization of porphyry copper type with pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite and some gold. The economic value of this metallogenic province is not yet fully established.
