Docetaxel (Taxotere®), a semisynthetic taxoid, acts as an antimicrotubule agent and is considered to have great potential in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer, advanced breast cancer, ovarian cancer and some other tumours. Well-recognized side-effects include dose-limiting neutropenia, fluid retention, myalgia, neuropathy, hypersensitivity reaction, alopecia, mucositis, nail changes and cutaneous reactions such as acral erythema. We describe a unique docetaxel-induced cutaneous reaction presenting as fixed erythematous plaque(s) unrelated to extravasation or previous skin injury; histopathological studies were performed in three of the four cases.

This work investigated the barrier properties of metalorganic chemical-vapor-deposited (CVD) tantalum nitride (TaN) and physical-vapor-deposited (PVD) TaN between Cu and Si. The CVD TaN film had a preferred orientation (200) with a grain size of around 60 nm, while the PVD TaN had a (111) preferred orientation with a grain size of around 20 nm, as determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. Degradation study of the Cu/TaN/Si contact system was also performed by sheet resistance measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), XRD, secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), and shallow junction diodes. These results indicated that the PVD TaN film can act as a better diffusion barrier than the CVD TaN film. The higher thermal stability of PVD TaN than CVD TaN can be accounted by their difference in microstructures. The failure mechanisms of both CVD TaN and PVD TaN films as diffusion barriers between Cu and Si were also discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

We deposited tantalum nitride (TaN) films by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (LP-MOCVD) using a new precursor tertbutylimidotris(diethylamido)tantalum (TBTDET). Strong Ta–N double bond in the precursor preserved the "TaN'' portion during the pyrolysis process. This method has yielded low-resistivity films. It changed from 10 mΩ cm (deposited at 500 °C) to 920 μΩ cm (obtained at 650 °C). The carbon and oxygen concentrations were low in the films deposited at 600 °C, as determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the as-deposited films exhibited polycrystalline structures with the lattice constants close to the bulk TaN value. The TaN barrier layer was successfully applied as a glue layer for CVD tungsten (W) metallization schemes. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

A new Mueller matrix approach is developed for the design of optical modes for all nematic liquid crystal displays (LCD). In particular, for linearly polarized light going into the LC cell, conditions for linear polarization and circular polarization outputs are obtained. By considering the switching between different polarization modes, new transmittive and reflective bistable twisted nematic (BTN) LCD operating conditions with optimized contrast and brightness are discovered. A passive matrix driven single polarizer reflective BTN display was fabricated with reasonably good measured optical performance and fast selection time. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

In this study, the physical and electrical properties of tungsten nitride thin films deposited by thermal decomposition of bis(tertbutylimido)bis(tertbutylamido)tungsten have been investigated. The films have an excellent step coverage over high aspect-ratio contact holes as well as a low carbon concentration. Strong W–N double bonds in the precursor preserved the nitrogen atoms during the pyrolysis process. This method subsequently yielded low-resistivity films. A decrease in film resistivity from 4300 to 620 μΩ cm corresponded to an increase in the deposition temperature from 500 to 650 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and wavelength dispersive spectroscopy (WDS) results indicated that the as-deposited films have face centered cubic (fcc) phase polycrystalline structures with excessive nitrogen atoms. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Three short-term bioassays were employed to assess the clastogenic and mutagenic activities of Maillard reaction sugar-amino acid solutions at initial pH values of 7 and 10. All of the Maillard reaction solutions with no S9 activation induced significant increases in chromosome aberrations in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Mitotic recombination and mutation occurred in Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain D5 cells when exposed to all Maillard reaction solutions. When Salmonella typhimurium TA100 cells were treated with Maillard reaction compounds, induction of revertants to histidine prototrophy occurred. Mutagen concentration in the browning reaction solution was dependent on initial pH.

HLA phenotypes were studied in 59 Chinese myasthenia gravis (MG) patients. Unfractionated peripheral blood mononuclear cells were used for typing of HLA-A, B and C, and B-enriched lymphocytes for HLA-DR. Seventy-nine healthy subjects were included as controls. When compared with healthy controls, the patients showed significant increases in HLA-Bw46 (47·5% versus 14%, χ2= 18·7, P 〈 0·001), HLA-DRw9 (59·3% versus 11%, χ2= 35·7, P 〈 0.001), while HLA-DR3 was decreased (3·4% versus 32·9%, χ2= 18·2, P 〈 0.001). Further analysis showed that the primary association was with DRw9 and the increase in Bw46 was secondary to it. Both HLA-Bw46 and -DRw9 were increased in all subgroups except where the age of onset was greater than 40 years. Finally, the HLA-A2-Bw46-DRw9 combination was also significantly increased in patients (25.4% versus 5.1%, χ2= 11.5, P 〈 0.001), especially in the subgroups of MG with age of onset of less than 10 and males with age of onset of less than 40 years.

Mouse monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were produced by using yellow grouper nervous necrosis virus (YGNNV) as an immunogen, isolated from infected yellow grouper, Epinephelus awoara (Temminck & Schlegel), and propagated in GB cells. In enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), 43 hybridoma clones secreting MAbs strongly reacted with the purified virus. Ten of them showed a higher neutralization index (NI) value between 6.5 and 4.5 (log10 NI) than the other 33 MAbs against YGNNV infection in cell culture. All 10 MAbs belonged to the IgG isotype with a κ light chain and recognized the 42 kDa coat protein of YGNNV by Western blot analysis. Immunohistochemical results demonstrated that the viral signals co-located with pathological lesions observed in retina, brain and spinal cord. These results indicate that the MAbs are useful for confirmative diagnosis of YGNNV infection.

A nodavirus was isolated from diseased yellow grouper, Epinephelus awoara, larvae cultured in southern Taiwan. The histopathology and RT–PCR results confirmed that it was a fish nodavirus; its coat protein gene sequence was similar to that of red spotted grouper nervous necrosis virus (RGNNV) and it is named yellow grouper nervous necrosis virus (YGNNV). A new nodavirus-susceptible cell line, grouper brain (GB) was established and characterized from the brain tissue of yellow grouper. The GB cells multiplied well in Leibovitz’s L-15 medium supplemented with 10% foetal bovine serum at temperatures between 24 and 32 °C, and have been subcultured more than 80 times, becoming a continuous cell line. The GB cell line consists of fibroblast-like cells and some epithelioid cells. The cell line yielded titres of YGNNV up to 108.5 TCID50 mL–1. The GB cells effectively replicated the virus at 28 °C, which could be purified to homogeneity by caesium chloride gradient centrifugation. Electron microscopy studies showed that purified virus particles were 25–30 nm in diameter. The cytoplasm of infected cells was filled with aggregates of virus particles. These results indicate that the GB cell line is a significant tool for the study of fish nodaviruses.

A newborn male infant developed subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) with extensive calcification, 1 week after hypothermic cardiac surgery. The lesions resolved spontaneously, without sequelae, within 10 weeks. Five cases of SCFN occurring after induced hypothermia, used as an adjuvant in cardiac surgery, have been reported to date in the English literature. Our description of a sixth case re-emphasizes hypothermia as one possible cause of SCFN of the newborn.

We report familial acanthosis nigricans affecting a 35-year-old woman, her 7-year-old son and 5 year-old daughter. Absence of the eyebrows and eyelashes was noted in this family. The mother had no axillary hair and her pubic hair was sparse. The boy also suffered from congenital heart disease and a congenital cataract in the left eye. The combination of acanthosis nigricans and ectodermal defects in this family may represent a distinct nosological entity.
