ISSN: 1089-7666Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The flow driven by a rotating end wall in a cylindrical container with aspect ratio H/R=2.5 is time dependent for Reynolds numbers Re=ΩR2/ν〉2700. For Reynolds numbers up to 4000 three solution branches have been identified, and we examine a solution on each one. At Re=3000, the flow is axisymmetric and time periodic. At Re=3500, the flow is quasiperiodic with a low-frequency modulation and supports a modulated rotating wave with azimuthal wave number k=5. At Re=4000, the flow is time periodic with a qualitatively different mode of oscillation to that at Re=3500. It also supports a modulated rotating wave, with k=6. ISSN: 1089-7666Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Flows produced by combined oscillatory translation and rotation of a circular cylinder in quiescent fluid have been studied using a two-dimensional direct numerical simulation technique. Results are presented for one set of the five dimensionless groups which characterize these flows, for which it is found that a streaming flow normal to the axis of translation is generated. The model simulates different species of grasses and forbs for a production year and provides the necessary input for a diet selection model. The model does not simulate growth, but does simulate the accumulation of live leaf and stem, the senescence of live biomass, and its transfer to dead mass using growth rates for leaf and stem of each species, which are specified for the model. Using such an approach specific types of years can be simulated. Plant components in the model include live leaf and stem, dead leaf and stem, and old dead leaf and stem which were produced during the previous growing season. These plant components were chosen because of their importance in the diet selection process and their differences in forage quality. Plant species which the model was validated against were Cynodon dactylon, Avena sativa. Schizachyrium scoparium and Paspalum plicatulum. Validation results indicated that with adjustment to input growth rates, live biomass could be adequately simulated. Deviations between measured and simulated dead components were observed for S. scopariumand P. plicatulum.High values observed for dead stem early in the trial resulted from lack of separation of dead and old dead stem material in the field sampling. Variations in dead forage throughout the season were caused by unexplained sources of variation. This indicated a need for field research to better quantify the dynamics of dead biomass. The model meets its goal of simulating biomass dynamics and forage quality of plant parts and it provides a suitable forage base to interface with diet selection and animal simulation models.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

These cohorts were located in the USA (1 cohort), Finland (2), the Netherlands (1), Italy (3), the former Yugoslavia (5), Greece (2), and Japan (2), and included a total of 12,763 subjects. Large differences in age-adjusted coronary heart disease (CHD) death rates were found, with extremes of 45 per 1000 in 25 years in Tanushimaru, Japan, to 288 per 1000 in 25 years in East Finland. In general, higher rates were found in the US and Northern European cohorts as compared to the Southern European and Japanese cohorts. However, during the last 10 years of follow-up large increases of CHD death rates were found in some Yugoslavian areas. Out of 5 measured entry characteristics treated as age-adjusted levels (serum cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, cigarette smoking, body mass index and physical activity at work), only serum cholesterol was significant in explaining cohort differences in CHD death rates. Over 50% of the variance in CHD death rates in 25 years was accounted for by the difference in mean serum cholesterol. This association tended to decline with increasing length of follow-up, but this was due to the great changes in mean serum cholesterol in the two Jugoslavian cohorts of Velika Krsna and Zrenjanin. When these two cohorts were excluded the association increased with time. Changes in mean serum cholesterol between year 0 and 10 helped in explaining differences in CHD death rates from year 10 onward. It can be concluded that this study suggests that mean serum cholesterol is the major risk factor in explaining cross-cultural differences in CHD.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
