    The TGV32, a 32-channel preamplifier–multiplicity discriminator chip for the multiplicity vertex detector (MVD) at PHENIX, is a unique silicon preamplifier in that it provides both an analog output for storage in an analog memory and a weighted summed-current output for conversion to a channel multiplicity count. The architecture and test results of the chip are presented. Details about the design of the preamplifier, discriminator, and programmable digital–analog converters performance as well as the process variations are presented. The chip is fabricated in a 1.2 μm, n-well, complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor process. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Background. Helicobacter pylori lipopolysaccharide (LPS) affects pepsinogen release by a nontoxic mechanism. We hypothesized that this effect was characteristic of the organism and related to the clinical status of the strain.Materials and methods. LPS was isolated from 11 H. pylori strains whose pathogenic profile was known and four other nongastric bacteria. The effects of luminal LPS on guinea pig gastric mucosal pepsinogen release was evaluated using the Ussing chamber technique. CCK-8 (10−9M) was used as a positive control.Results. H. pylori LPS dose-dependently stimulated pepsinogen release with a maximal stimulation at 250 µg/ml (~4500%; p 〈 .001 vs. control). LPS from other Helicobacter or Campylobacter species had no effect on pepsinogen release. ANOVA demonstrated significant differences in the efficacies of pepsinogen release between the 11 clinical H. pylori strains (p 〈 .0001) despite the fact that they were all cagA+ and 90% had the cytotoxic vacA subtype s1. Physical and chemical disruption of the LPS suggested that both the structure and the carbohydrate composition of this molecule may play a critical role in pepsinogen release. Polymyxin B partly (p 〈 .03) inhibited and dephosphorylation completely inhibited (p = .0002) LPS-stimulated pepsinogen release.Conclusion. Pepsinogen release is an innate property of all cagA+H. pylori LPS. The structure of the molecule and composition of side-chains are important in this response which appears to be partially lipid A driven.

    An airborne magnetic survey of an area of 580 km2 centred on Gosses Bluff was flown in 1968. This survey formed part of a joint project by the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources and the United States Geological Survey to evaluate the hypothesis that Gosses Bluff is of impact origin.Analyses of the magnetic data show that shallow sources of magnetic disturbance flank the Bluff on its southern side. Interpretation of the magnetic anomalies indicates their source to be shock-melted breccias of possible Jurassic age.

    The daily growth rates of ovarian follicles were recorded ultrasonically for five days until ovulation in 56 spontaneously ovulating women and related to endocrine and clinical parameters. Over the 5-day period, the average diameter of the follicle destined to ovulate increased from 12 to 23 mm, the second largest follicle from 6 to 12 mm, the third largest follicle from 5 to 9 mm and the fourth largest follicle from 4 to 8 mm. Similar but lesser growth rates occurred in the follicles in the contralateral ovary. Ovulation occurred within 24 hours of the luteinizing hormone (LH) peak, and the mean peak diameter of the ovulating follicle was 23.2±0.3 (SEM) mm, (range 18–29 mm) before ovulation, and subsequent luteal function was judged to be normal. Follicular growth was most closely correlated with increasing peripheral blood oestrogen levels. In 16 women who had a laparoscopy within 12 hours of the last ultrasound and following the LH peak, the mean diameter of the largest follicle as measured by ultrasound (23.6±0.4 mm) was similar to that measured at laparoscopy (22.8±0.4 mm) and estimated from the volume of follicular fluid aspirated (average 5.8±0.2 ml), 22.5 mm. The follicular fluid levels of progesterone were high on the day of the LH peak and blood progesterone levels had risen significantly indicating that luteinization of the dominant Graafian follicles had already occurred prior to ovulation. This study confirms that ultrasonic monitoring provides a reliable measure of follicular growth and allows studies correlating morphological changes with both normal and abnormal endocrine function of the human ovary.

    Active, passive, and hybrid mode locking of a monolithic extended-cavity semiconductor laser with an integrated saturable absorber have been demonstrated. Actively mode locked at a repetition rate of 8.6 GHz, 6.2 ps pulses were measured. Hybrid mode locking resulted in 4.4 ps pulses. The extended-cavity laser also exhibits self-starting passive mode locking at a repetition rate of 8.57 GHz with 5.5 ps pulses. A broad spectrum allows wavelength selectivity over a range of 15 nm with little change in the pulse width.
