The electronic and magnetic properties of thin (one to three monolayer) epitaxial Fe films grown on W(100) are studied using spin-polarized angle-resolved photoemission. Low-energy electron-diffraction studies of a number of samples confirm excellent epitaxy for monolayer films and suggest that two- and three-layer films begin to form strain-relieving dislocations. Submonolayer films manifest no in-plane remanent spin polarization at T=115 K, but effectively quench W(100) surface states and surface resonances. Monolayer and thicker films yield spin-polarized photoelectrons under remanent magnetic conditions. Analysis of spin-polarized electron energy distribution curves (EDCs) corresponding to even-symmetry initial states along the Γ¯-M¯ direction of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone yields a flat majority-spin band at 0.95 eV and an exchange split pair of bands (ΔEexΔEex= 2.15 ± 0.2 eV at Γ¯, 1.2±0.2 eV at M¯) which exhibit significant dispersion. No significant changes in the binding energies of spin-up or -down features in EDCs obtained above the Curie temperature at Γ¯ (normal emission geometry) were detected.

    Notes:
Spin labeling techniques, specifically the use of electron-spin-polarized He(2 3S) metastable atoms coupled with energy-resolved spin analysis of the ejected electrons, are used to investigate the dynamics of metastable atom deexcitation by molecules in a film several monolayers thick condensed on a cooled Cu(100) surface. Data for CO2, H2O, Cl2, and O2 films show that metastable deexcitation is analogous to gas-phase Penning ionization, i.e., the condensed molecules can be considered as a "solid gas.'' Detailed differences are, however, evident that can be attributed to the presence of neighboring molecules. Data for C60 films are also presented which suggest the possibility of plasmon excitation as is observed in photoionization and electron energy loss data.

    Notes:
Spin-labeling techniques, specifically the use of electron-spin-polarized He(2 3S) metastable atoms coupled with energy-resolved spin analysis of the product electrons, are used to investigate the dynamics of Penning ionization in collisions between He(2 3S) atoms and H2O, SO2, NO, and NO2. The data complement earlier studies of the reaction dynamics based on analysis of the energy distribution of the product electrons and confirm that ionization can occur via a number of different reaction channels. For example, the present results show that in collisions with targets having a positive electron affinity, ionization via the ionic channel is important and that effects due to spin-orbit coupling must be considered. The data also provide evidence that exchange may be important in collisions with open-shell targets.

A technique for absolute calibration of a Mott polarimeter is described that makes use of electrons of accurately known polarization obtained through surface Penning ionization. This approach provides higher count rates and lower uncertainties than obtained in earlier measurements based on gas-phase Penning ionization.

A source of low-energy, electron-spin-polarized 4He+ ions based on an optically pumped, rf-excited helium discharge is described. Ion polarizations P+ of ∼0.13 are achieved at beam currents of ∼0.1 nA, decreasing to ∼0.09 at currents of ∼0.5 nA. Ion beam energies as low as 10 eV have been realized, with an energy spread of (approximately-less-than)3 eV full width half maximum. The ion polarization can be reversed (P+→−P+) simply by changing the sense of circular polarization of the optical pumping radiation. The source is suitable for use in a wide variety of applications including surface physics studies. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

A simple technique is described for determining the polarization of He(2 3S) atoms contained in an active discharge or afterglow. The polarization (and alignment) is obtained by measuring the attenuation of a circularly polarized probe beam provided by a 1.083 μm laser diode whose output frequency is scanned to allow separate measurements on the 2 3S1→2 3P0, 2 3S1→2 3P1, and 2 3S1→2 3P2 transitions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes:
The changes in serum iron and total iron binding capacity were followed in pregnant women after total dose infusion of iron-dextran for iron deficiency anaemia. The mean halflife of the iron-dextran in serum over the first 60 hours was 42 hours. When the infusion was given during the second trimester the serum iron often fell after the infusion to the lower part of the normal range, and in some cases even below normal; in these the iron binding capacity, which also fell at first, later rose again in the manner seen towards the end of pregnancy in noninfused patients. These changes occurred even in patients who did not subsequently manifest iron deficiency after delivery. A low serum iron coupled with a high iron binding capacity may be difficult to interpret in late pregnancy, but can be useful post partum for assessing the adequacy of treatment.

The performance of the Rice source of spin polarized electrons, which is based on an optically pumped flowing helium afterglow, has been substantially improved. He(23S) metastable atoms contained in the afterglow are optically pumped using 1.08 μm 23S1↔23P1 radiation from an LNA laser. Spin conservation in subsequent chemi-ionization reactions with CO2 results in the production of free polarized electrons that are extracted from the afterglow. At low currents, (approximately-less-than)1 μA, polarizations of 80%–90% are achieved. This decreases to ∼75% at 10 μA and to ∼50% near 100 μA. The polarization can be simply reversed (P→−P). The energy spread in the extracted beam is 〈0.4 eV, and the beam emittance is 〈4 mrad cm−1 at 270 eV. This source is suitable for use in a wide variety of applications, and is particularly attractive for use with the new generation of high-duty factor electron accelerators that are currently being developed.

A UHV compatible Mott polarization analyzer is described that employs electron accelerating voltages of ∼20 kV. The efficiency of the analyzer, ∼3×10−5, is competitive with those provided by other polarimeters. The present analyzer is considerably simpler and more compact than earlier designs and can be used to undertake energy- and angle-resolved polarization measurements with input beam currents below ∼10−14 A.

We describe the patterning of silicon by exposing a hydrogen-passivated Si(100) surface to Ar(3P0,2) metastable atoms through a fine Ni grid in the presence of a small background pressure of oxygen. Metastable atom impact leads to the formation of a uniform oxide layer that is sufficiently resistant to chemical etching to allow feature depths (approximately-greater-than)20 nm to be realized. With optical manipulation of the incident metastable atoms, this technique could provide the basis for massively parallel nanoscale fabrication on silicon without the use of organic resists. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
