Iron containing diamond-like amorphous carbon (a-C:Fe) films were deposited by filtered cathodic vacuum arc technique. The influences of Fe content and substrate bias on the surface energy of the films were investigated. The surface energy of a-C:Fe films was determined by the contact angle measurement. Atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and x-ray induced photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to analyze the origin of the variation of surface energy with various Fe content and substrate bias. It is found that the contact angle for water increases significantly after incorporating Fe into the films and the films become hydrophobic. The roughness of these films has no effect on the contact angle. The surface energy is reduced from 42.8 to 25 dyne/cm after incorporating Fe into the a-C film (10% Fe in the target), which is due to the reduction of both dispersive and polar component. The reduction in dispersive component is ascribed to the decrease of atomic density of the a-C:Fe films due to the increase in sp2 bonded carbon. When sp2 content increases to some extent, the atomic density remains constant and hence dispersive component does not change. The absorption of oxygen on the surface plays an important role in the reduction of the polar component for the a-C:Fe films. It is proposed that such network as (Cn–O–Fe)–O–(Fe–O–Cn) may be formed and responsible for the reduction of polar component. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

: Nickel is the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis in Singapore, resulting in positive reactions in patch tests between 7 and 14%. Women are more commonly affected and have an earlier mean age of onset than men (21 compared with 32). Wrist watches, earrings, buttons, and necklaces are the common source of nickel allergy. Twenty-five percent of patients also had some form of associated hand eczema. Thirty-six percent of patients had a history of atopy showing a higher incidence than the normal populations. Thirty-seven percent of patients had an associated positive reaction to cobalt.

A study of growth gradients of the limbs and axial skeleton was carried out in cattle, sheep and pigs, with the aid of gross anatomical dissection. The comparative study is discussed relative to each individual species and to interspecies differences.

    1. The effect of bromocriptine (a prolactin suppressant drug) on the serum levels of calcium was studied in the male rat. The drug was administered subcutaneously at a dosage of 100μg per 100 g body weight three times per day.2. Chronic treatment with bromocriptine had no significant effect on the serum calcium levels. It appears that neither bromocriptine per se nor normal circulating prolactin levels exert any significant influence on blood calcium homeostasis.

    1. The effects of bromocriptine and indomethacin on prolactin-induced pseudopregnancy were studied in pituitary grafted rats.2. Administration of bromocriptine (a prolactin suppressant drug) at a total dose of 3 mg/kg body weight, given in 3 divided doses on day 5 of pseudo-pregnancy, effectively terminated it within 3 days. However, injection of indomethacin (a prostaglandin inhibitor) at a total dose of 6 mg/kg body weight, given in 3 divided doses, on the same day of pseudopregnancy had no significant effect on its duration.3. It appears unlikely that the luteotrophic effect of prolactin on the corpus luteum is mediated by the stimulation of prostaglandin synthesis.
