Affected patients exhibited myopia with frequent retinal detachment or glaucoma. Most of them had characteristic facial dysmorphism, the Pierre-Robin sequence being observed in four individuals. Neonatal radiological signs of the Weissenbacher-Zweymüller syndrome were also noticed but early arthopathy was not reported in adults. Restriction fragment length polymorphism studies with the type II collagen gene (COL2A1) showed a recombination event between the disease locus and COL2A1, thus excluding collagen type II as the candidate gene. Although the calculation of the likelihood of genetic heterogeneity versus homogeneity based on 10 families was not statistically significant, we suggest that a second locus is probably involved in this highly variable syndrome.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-1866Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: GeosciencesNotes: Abstract Exploitation of low-grade iron ore would be quite unique in a South African context as South Africa is well endowed with high-grade iron ore resources. Low-grade iron ore, defined as containing between 20 and 47% iron, is thought to be the primary iron-bearing lithology from which most high-grade ore deposits formed, through different processes of enrichment. The low-grade iron ores in the Northern Province represent meta-banded iron formations (BIFs), with an average iron content of about 36%. The main iron-bearing mineral is magnetite. The Northern Province ores have to be milled to sizes smaller than 150 μm in order to liberate the iron minerals from the host rock, and beneficiation is accomplished through a series of magnetic separation processes. Irrespective of the in situ quality of the ore, final concentrates of exceptionally good quality with more than 69% iron and very low contaminant levels can be produced. This, combined with mass yields of between 40 and 50% and iron recoveries greater than 80%, are excellent for this type of iron ore deposit. The beneficiation products are suitable for use in iron- and steel-making processes.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The method consists of coating a glass tube with quartz powder prior to pulling the tube into a capillary. The inner surface of the capillary consists of an even distribution of quartz particles fused to the walls. This surface has been found readily deactivated by standard procedures and ideal for the preparation of thick-film glass capillary columns. The method has been thoroughly tested in two independent laboratories to ensure that the procedures described are reproducible.Additional Material: 3 Ill.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
