The relativistic generalization of the Breit–Wigner formula presented in this paper is not based on perturbative quantum field theory. Rather, it starts with two free Klein–Gordon or Dirac particles interacting only at the point of coincidence in space-time. This state has then two components, the two-particle one just mentioned and a single-particle one representing the compound system. From considerations of conservation of probability the boundary condition is derived relating the two-particle component at coincidence with the one-particle component of this state. From this boundary condition, the R and S matrices of the problems are obtained as well as a Breit–Wigner type of cross section. The present paper is restricted to a scalar compound particle so its spin is 0 and its parity +. In the concluding section, the generalization to one-point, but still Poincaré invariant, boundary conditions is mentioned. This generalization allows one to go to compound particles with arbitrary spin and parity and, in particular to the case 1− which may be of some practical interest.

Conclusions a) The relatively fair integration (0.68 average value) obtained in major subfields by Spanish physicists when publishing in foreign journals denotes that their research was in accordance with the main publication trends in these worldwide known journals. b) From the fact that there was not a significant difference between the specific impact factor of Spanish authors working on solid state physics, theoretical physics, atomic and nuclear physics, and the impact factor of all the other authors who have published in the journals, it can be concluded that the quality and interest of the research done by the majority of the Spanish physics community are attaining the same credit as their international peers. c) The output of Spanish physics grows rapidly with time. Citations grow at a higher rate than publications.

Abstract A patient with retinitis pigmentosa, hypertension with interstitial nephropathy, short limb dwarfism with Madelung deformity of the forearms and an unclassified type of brachydactyly is described. Such bone dysplasia has never been reported to date either as a single entity or associated with renal and retinal diseases.

Abstract The logarithmic asymptotics of Laurent-type orthogonal polynomials is obtained for a wide class of weights. This is used to estimate the exact rate of convergence of two-point Padé approximants for the corresponding class of Stieltjes-type meromorphic functions.

Abstract Rational interpolants, some of the poles of which are left free, are used to approximate the transfer functions of a large class of possibly unstable infinite-dimensional control systems. The free poles are used to detect the singularities of the transfer function which are responsible for the instability of the system.

Abstract. Unstable particles can be consistently described in the framework of quantum field theory. Starting from the full S matrix amplitudes of $B^+ \rightarrow (2\pi, 3\pi) l^+ \nu$ decays as examples of processes where the $\rho-\omega$ resonances dominate, we propose a prescription for the mixing of two “quasi-physical” unstable states that differs from the one obtained from the diagonalization of the $M-\mathrm{i}\Gamma/2$ non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. We discuss some important consequences for CP violation in the $K_L-K_S$ system.

Abstract This study is an analysis of six years of Spanish bibliography retrieved from INSPEC and COMPENDEX. The quantitative evolution of the scientific activity by years and Institutions, the recent tendencies to publish in foreign journals, as well as to have the papers signed by more authors are followed. The most frequently used journals are ranked according to their impact factor and subject. Some hypothesis are formulated and tested, trying to find a relationship between the growth of the Spanish scientific activity and its quality.

Considering the lack of explanations for absorption and resorption currents in polymers, we propose to reformulate the latest and most comprehensive model based on surface ohmic conduction. This model, carried out by numerical simulation, contained oversimplifications. We also analyze the diffusion of carriers from the electrode edge. Finally, and in view of the negative results obtained by both models, we propose a new model based on a mechanism of drift diffusion which allows us to explain the characteristics of absorption and resorption currents in polymers. The simulation carried out for the three models is very precise and employs the integral equation method.

Background: Subjective complaints and reactions after placebo administration during food challenges (FC) may make their outcome difficult to interpret. We determined serum ECP and tryptase as tryptase in saliva during FC, looking for markers to support challenge outcomes. Methods: Twelve patients with systemic reactions after food intake and nine presenting oral allergy syndrome (OAS) underwent skin tests; total and specific IgE determination; double-blind, placebo-controlled FC (DBPCFC); and open challenges. Blood samples were collected before and 1, 2, and 5 h after challenge and saliva before and 5, 30, and 60 min after challenge. ECP and tryptase were quantified by ImmunoCAP (Pharmacia-Upjohn, Sweden). Serum tryptase of 〉10 µg/l was considered positive. Results: After positive DBPCFC (n=8), ECP rose significantly (P〈0.05) at 1-h – 16.03 (12.8) μg/l (mean [standard deviation]) – and 2-h intervals – 17.56 (10.7) μg/l – compared to basal level of 9 (6.4) μg/l. After negative DBPCFC (n=6), ECP increased from basal 9.63 (3.9) μg/l to 24.84 (14.17) μg/l at the 2-h time point. There were nonsignificant differences in ECP between patients with positive and negative FC. Two patients with positive challenge showed a tryptase level of 〉10 µg/l and only one patient with OAS showed 5.6 µg/l of tryptase 5 min after FC. Conclusions: ECP and tryptase in serum and saliva were not useful markers for FC outcomes.

The effect of temperature on the protein extraction and expressible moisture of uncooked beef formulations prepared at different fat and added water (AW) levels was evaluated from – 2 to 26C. Samples were formulated from beef shoulder clods, beef subcutaneous fat and water to contain target compositions of 5% fat, 35% AW; 13.5% fat, 26.5% AW; 21.5% fat, 18.5% AW; 30% fat, 10% AW. The temperature-fat interaction was not significant for all variables. Based on regression equation, salt extractable proteins were maximally extracted at 12C and myofibrillar proteins between 10 and 12C. Temperature did not affect (P 〉 0.05) the expressible moisture. Regression analysis indicated that salt extractable proteins were maximally extracted at 27.5% fat and myofibrillar proteins were extracted at 25% fat. Expressible moisture decreased as fat level increased. Based on this model system, maximal protein extraction occurs at 10–12C and is not formulation × temperature dependent. Fat level differences are attributed to ionic strength differences.
