    Notes:
    Based on Enskog's dense gas theory and on Grad's method of moments, the 13-field and the five-field theories are developed for monatomic dense gases of hard spherical particles. The transport coefficients for the five-field theory are obtained from an iteration method akin to the Maxwellian procedure. The problem concerning the propagation of plane harmonic waves of small amplitude is analyzed for both theories.

    The laws of Ohm, Fourier, and Navier–Stokes for an ionized gas are obtained from a simple method that combines the features of the methods of Chapman–Enskog and Grad. The transport coefficients are easily determined through inversions of second-order and fourth-order tensors. This work is based on the Boltzmann equation for ionized gases, where (i) the preponderant number of collisions are those that lead to small deflections corresponding to distant encounters; and (ii) a cutoff at the Debye length has to be considered. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    It is shown that the entropy principle provides a unique specific form of the radiative momentum flux. Also the nonequilibrium entropy and entropy flux of radiation thermodynamics are calculated explicitly. Waves are discussed in two limiting cases.

    An accurate thin-film thickness monitor capable of a resolution of at least 0.01 nm is described. The errors arising from the temperature dependence of the crystal resonant frequency are minimized by heating a closely matched reference crystal until their temperatures are equalized; and by subtracting their frequencies of oscillations. These functions are performed by simple electronic devices.

    A kinetic theory for a mixture of ν-polyatomic gases of perfectly rough, perfectly elastic, and rigid spherical molecules is developed. A macroscopic state of the mixture is characterized by 16ν+1 fields of partial densities, partial velocities, partial pressure tensors, partial translational heat fluxes, partial rotational heat fluxes, and temperature of the mixture. The generalized laws of Fick, Fourier, and Navier–Stokes are obtained from an iteration method akin to the Maxwellian procedure. As an application, the transport coefficients for binary mixtures of CH4–CF4, CH4–CD4, and CD4–CF4 are determined.

    Abstract In this paper an analysis of the Dutch bond market is made. The technique used is linear programming. Given the fact that coupon income and capital gains are taxed differently and that some investors are tax-exempt in the Netherlands, it is shown that there are overpriced bonds in the market. This is as can be expected. But it is found that there are bonds that a rational investor would never hold in his portpolio, whatever the tax rate the investor has to pay on coupon income. Given the fact that the Dutch bond market is very illiquid for some bonds, an analysis of the effects of bid-ask spreads is made. It is shown that the effect of these spreads cannot explain the existence of bonds that are overpriced. It is not clear where these remaining overpricings stem from.

    Summary To date, long-term intravenous drug users studied at regional European centers of illicit drug use have had a high number of LAV/HTLV-III infections. Among 200 patients remanded by court or referred from prison to a special clinic in northern Germany for young delinquent drug abusers, 26 (17%) of 157 IV drug abusers were HTLV-III seropositive. With 40% seropositive, female patients showed a significantly higher prevalence of HTLV-III infection than males. The results of longitudinal serological, immunological, and clinical observations over periods of 12 months and 2–3 years indicate that under conditions of continuous medical surveillance, sound preventive counseling, and steady therapeutic care during long-term coeducative residential treatment of drug abusers, neither detectable HTLV-III transmission nor definite progression of HTLV-III induced impairment of immune regulatory functions must ensue.

    Summary A case of symmetrical neurofibroma with onion bulbs in various stages of development and progression to microneurinomas is presented. Immunohistochemistry with differentiation and growth factor markers as well as electron microscopy showed a Schwann cell origin of the concentrically arranged cells. The onion bulbs differed from those of hypertrophic neuropathy by their more compact structure. A partial expression of cellular proliferation markers in the onion bulbs was consistent with a multifocal proliferative activity, confirming the neoplastic nature of the lesion.

    Summary The new forms are intercasts with male influences in the cuticle structures. In the pharaoh's antMonomorium pharaonis (L.) (Hymenoptera, Formicidæ) we found gynergatandromorphs, ergatogynandromorphs, androgynergatomorphs and androergatogynomorphs. Observations on the biology and behaviour of these forms which can be produced experimentally are included.
