Transforming growth factor β(TGFβ) has both positive and negative effects on cutaneous wound healing. Smad7 acts as a major downstream antagonist of TGFβ signaling in keratinocytes and its role in wound healing has not been defined. We have established a Smad7 transgenic mouse line using a keratin 5 (K5) promoter (K5.Smad7) which expresses Smad7 transgene at a mild level (∼2 fold of the endogenous Smad7 in the skin). These mice did not have overt skin defects as shown from our previous Smad7 transgenic mice expressing much higher levels of the Smad7 transgene (EMBO J 2002, 21:2580–90). K5.Smad7 mice from the above low expressor line and non-transgenic littermates were subject to 6-mm full-thickness excisional wounding. K5.Smad7 mice exhibited early scab rejection, reduced inflammation, and accelerated re-epithelialization as compared to non-transgenic mice. To further determine the stage-specific effects of Smad7 on wound healing, we generated a transgenic model in which Smad7 transgene expression can be induced in the epidermis and hair follicles (gene-switch-Smad7) by topically RU486 application. Smad7 induction from day 3 to day 7 after excisional wounding reduced inflammatory responses through suppressing expression of a variety of inflammatory cytokines/chemokines in gene-switch-Smad7 mice as compared to control mice. Meanwhile, overexpression of Smad7 exhibited accelerated re-epithelialization, which correlated with increased expression of metalloproteinases and elevated Erk (extracellular signal-regulated kinases) signaling in the leading epidermal edges in gene-switch-Smad7 wounds compared to control wounds. Smad7 induction from day 7 to day 20 after excisional wounding reduced dermal fibrotic response and angiogenesis in the dermis, resulting in a better tissue repair. We conclude that the effectsof Smad7 on wound healing are likely due to blocking the negative effects of TGFβ on cutaneous wound healing.

We have measured the magnetoresistance curves of a silver-clad Bi (2223) tape below critical temperature Tc over a magnetic field range up to 8 T. At temperatures well below Tc the magnetoresistive transition can be well described by a thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) process. The activation energies inferred from such dissipation measurements are found to have the form U=U0+U' (H,T), where U0 is magnetic field and temperature independent, U' (H,T) is proportional to (1−T/Tc)n/H. At temperatures very close to Tc the TAFF dissipation can no longer be found and the magnetoresistance seems to be determined by the combination of viscous flux flow and thermal fluctuation. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Two kinds of sintering atmosphere, N2 and air, were used to study the effect of atmosphere on the formation of the low Tc phase and the high Tc phase. The annealing temperatures were 810 °C in N2 and 850 °C in air. The resistivity measurements and the x-ray diffraction analysis showed that while the fraction of the high Tc phase continued to increase with sintering times in air, it did not increase in any appreciable amount even after 264 h of sintering in N2 atmosphere. Compared with air, N2 atmosphere enhanced the formation of the low Tc phase and inhibited the formation of the high Tc phase.

MnSb epitaxial layers were grown on GaAs (100) substrates by hot-wall epitaxy and the structural, morphology, and magnetic properties of the layers were examined. In this study, three films of different nominal film thicknesses were fabricated. All the films are found to be well-interconnected with low intergrain resistance values being measured. It is observed that the thinnest film has grains elongated along GaAs [011] and the grains in the other two thicker films exhibit two orthogonal domains. The above microstructures of the films have a marked impact on the easy magnetization axis. The easy magnetization axis of the thinnest film is found to be along that of the elongation direction of the grains and that for the thickest film is along GaAs [011¯] (along the [12¯.0] axis of MnSb). The largest measured values for coercivity, remanent magnetization, and squareness ratio of the three films are found in the thinnest film, and the thickest film has the highest saturation magnetization. Finally, the angular variation of coercivity curves indicate that the magnetization reversal mechanism of the three films is an incoherent rotation type, i.e., non-Stoner–Wohlfarth type. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

The ac susceptibility (ACS) of an YBa2Cu3O thin film in a perpendicular ac magnetic field (Ha) from 0.22 to 30.8 G is measured as a function of temperature. The temperature dependence of the real (χ′) and imaginary (χ′′) parts of the ACS for various Ha can be well scaled onto a single curve using the peak value (χp″) and temperature (Tp) of χ′′(T) as the scaling parameters. The scaling law suggests that the critical state can be established only below Tp. Above Tp, the ACS is determined by the screening effect of the film due to the sharp decrease of its resistance. Below Tp, the scaling behavior is in agreement with the theoretical approaches based on the critical state model, only if the temperature for zero critical current density is related to the irreversibility temperature Tirr rather than Tc. From the scaling law, we found that Tirr=Tp. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Measurements of the magnetoresistance R(H) as functions of the temperature and the angle θ between the applied magnetic field and the plane of a (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O/Ag tape have been performed in a low magnetic field region below Tc. Contrary to the two-dimensional vortex pancake model, the data do not scale well with H sin(θ) for small angles. Instead, our results show a general three-dimensional scaling behavior based on the anisotropy in the upper critical field Hc2 over entire angular range. From the scaling, the dissipation anisotropy is found to be unchanged at lower temperatures and decreases with increasing temperature at temperatures close to Tc. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Detailed measurements of voltage-current (V-I) curves and magnetoresistance (R-H) for Bi(2223) thick film were carried out for various temperatures and magnetic fields. The results indicate that a flux lattice melting transition takes place as the temperature and the field are raised. This transition boundary in the (H,T) phase diagram was found to follow the irreversibility line described by the function of H=H0(1−T/Tc)3/2. Above this line, the V-I curves display a flux-flow-like character. Temperature and magnetic field dependencies of flow resistance Rf-T and Rf-H show a varied viscosity in different temperature and field ranges. Below this line, V-I curves in the low voltage region present a thermally activated flux creep property. The R-H measurements indicate that the fields at the onset and the midpoint of the magnetoresistive transition also follow a (1−T/Tc)3/2 dependence.

We develop and analyze a mean-field model free energy that describes two fluid phases on a substrate in order to calculate the (numerically) exact line and boundary tensions, on approach to the first-order wetting transition. A theory based on the van der Waals theory of gas–liquid interfaces is used. We implement a multigrid algorithm to determine the two-dimensional spatial variation of the density across the three-phase and boundary regions, and hence, the line and boundary tensions. As the wetting transition is approached, the tensions approach the same, finite, positive limit with diverging slopes. We compare our results with those of recent related work. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
