We have attempted to quantify and understand these effects in 12 Mediterranean soils. We measured the CIELAB colour variables hab, L*, and C*ab in aggregated and dispersed soil samples, and also in coarse sand, fine sand, silt, and clay samples before and after sequential removal of organic matter, carbonates, and Fe oxides. Grassmann's colour-mixing equations adjusted by regression analysis described the colour of the dispersed soil from its particle-size fractions with an error of 1% for hab, 4% for L*, and 9% for C*ab. This suggests that the contribution of each fraction to the colour of the dispersed soil can be accurately calculated by its colorimetric data weighted by its content and a regression coefficient, which was greatest for clay. We inferred the influence of a component within each fraction by measuring the colour changes after its removal. Iron oxides reduced hab of the silicated substrate by 19%, reduced L* by 12%, and increased C*ab by 64% in all particle-size fractions. Carbonates and organic matter had little influence: the former because they impart little colour to the silicates and the latter because there was little of it. The CIELAB colour-difference between dispersed and aggregated soil (mean ΔE*ab = 15.3) was due mainly to ΔL* (−14.7). Aggregation contributed to diminishing L* of dispersed soil by 34%. Scanning electron microscopy showed that Fe oxides and organic coatings cover the surface of aggregates thereby influencing soil colour.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1996Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We present in this work the results of a Raman spectroscopy study on the plasmon–phonon coupling in Ge-doped p-type gallium arsenide. A series of polarized Raman scattering experiments were carried out on epitaxial films grown by liquid-phase epitaxy on (100) GaAs substrates at 20, 100, and 300 K. The films were p type with free hole densities varying in the range of 5×1017–1×1020 cm−3. Under the scattering configurations employed, the longitudinal optical (LO) mode is forbidden for crossed polarization while the transverse optical (TO) mode is forbidden for both parallel and crossed polarizations. However, all the polarized Raman spectra showed two peaks with frequencies close to the TO and LO phonons of semi-insulating GaAs. The appearance of such forbidden modes was accounted for with a theoretical model which considers phonon–plasmon coupled modes with wave vectors much larger than those given by the regular q≈0 wave vector transferred by photons. Ionized acceptor impurities provide such additional wave vector transfer through elastic scattering of the photoexcited electrons and holes. It is demonstrated that the experimental values for position and linewidth of the peaks are well described by the theoretical calculations when Fröhlich-type and deformation potential mechanisms are considered as means of interaction. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1995Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Low-temperature photoluminescence spectroscopy was used to study AlxGa1−xAs intrinsic epitaxial layers in the range of aluminum content between 0.45〈x〈0.9 in the region where the band gap minimum is indirect. Nonintentionally doped samples were grown by liquid phase epitaxy very near the saturation temperature (∼800 °C). The heterostructures consisted of an AlxGa1−xAs layer grown on top of a GaAs Si-doped (n∼2×1018 cm−3) substrate with orientation (100) 2° toward the (110). There is little information on the zero phonon excitonic lines for Al compositions x(approximately-greater-than)0.6, because the appearance of these lines depends on several factors such as internal strength, crystalline defects, and impurities. In our samples the excitonic lines were observable up to x=0.9. Transitions related to bound-to-free carrier as well as their phonon replicas were observable too. The data obtained from the spectra fitted with multigaussian lines allowed us to estimate the dependencies on the Al composition, x, of the bound exciton peak, the bound exciton binding energy, and the exciton localization energy. The acceptor ionization energy attributed to carbon residual impurities in As sites and its dependence on x was also obtained. Fitting by Gaussian lines the phonon region, the PL spectra fitted better with the TO(X) AlAs-type branch rather than the LO(X) AlAs-type, with a linear dependence with x in the studied range. The phonon energies of the GaAs type seem to behave almost constant and it was difficult to assign them to the LO(X) GaAs type or to TO(X) GaAs type due to the scatter of the data for high values of x. Other phonon replicas from the bound exciton and the electron-to-acceptor carbon transition (e-A°) coincide with the LO(X) AlAs type and TA(X), TA(X)+LA(X) and two LA(X) phonon energies. All the dependencies we present here are valid for aluminum compositions in the range 0.48〈x〈0.90. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

We have studied four terrae rossae over limestone (two Chromic-Leptic Luvisols, a Rhodi-Leptic Luvisol and a Chromi-Leptic Cambisol) in Sierra Gádor (Almería, southern Spain), in particular the various formation processes by (i) examination of their morphological, analytical and mineralogical characteristics (including crystallochemical parameters of the mica), (ii) examination of the insoluble residue of the gravel and rock, (iii) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of sand and silt grains, and (iv) examination of the geochemistry of the soil solution. We have investigated the autochthonous or allochthonous nature of the soil material (fine earth and gravel) in relation to the rocky substrate, concluding that both origins are possible. Our SEM study of the morphology of the quartz grains shows that some are insoluble residue and some are probably wind blown from desert and coastal sources. The micas in the fine earth fractions are inherited from the insoluble residue. Comparison of the crystallochemical parameters of micas in the insoluble residue and the soil clay shows that the clay has more SiIV and (Fe, Mg)VI, and less AlIV, AlVI and x (layer charge) than the insoluble residue. It also has fewer polytypes 2M1 and more 1M and has a smaller crystal size, especially in B horizons. The kaolinite is of varied origins including neoformation and inheritance from underlying rock. Some of the kaolinite and some mica has been blown in from elsewhere, probably from desert and coastal sources. The soils have undergone other typical processes of terrae rossae including dissolution of carbonate, illuviation of clay and iron oxides, and rubifaction.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
