Summary The cerebral cortex was examined for sings of pathology in the NZB, BXSB, and MRL autoimmune strains of mice, crosses among these strains, and control mice. Previously, we reported that 20% of NZB mice had ectopic collections of neurons in layer I of the cortex. In this study we replicated this finding in the NZB, and extended it to the BXSB strain, and BXSB/NZB and MRL/NZB hybrids. The MRL strain, however, did not have a large number of individuals with brain anomalies. Thus, a number of autoimmune mice strains and hybrids develop brain anomalies, although at least one autoimmune strain does not. We suggest that in certain autoimmune strains maternal autoantibodies cross the placenta and damage the developing fetal brain, and that these strains may be useful experimental models for studying the development of brain anomalies seen in the dyslexic human.

Summary Relations among circadian rhythms in serum iron, glucagon and insulin and urinary cyclic AMP excretion differ drastically when diurnally active, nocturnally resting human adults consume all daily food for one week as breakfast only and for another week as dinner only—a finding of interest to diverse fields, e.g., for optimizing certain kinds of therapy or for a better utilization of calories.

Abstract The nutritional efficacy of antibacterial feed additives in improving animal performance and reducing production costs has been studied extensively for over thirty years. Responses vary greatly with time and place and quantitative estimates thereof are required, with appropriate confidence limits for different circumstances, to assist efficient practical application of such performance promoters in animal production. Modern computers have facilitated multi-factorial analysis of dose-response relationships and the elucidation of the influence of diverse other determinants, such as level of animal performance and duration of supplementation. The objectives, underlying principles, methodology and future prospects of comprehensive assessments, in the format of algebraic models, are reviewed and are illustrated by examples drawn from the use of copper, tylosin and bacitracin in the nutrition of pigs, broilers and laying hens.
