Published 2004Staff ViewISSN: 1524-475XSource: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Introduction : Proinflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β, and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are elevated in chronic wounds and their levels decrease during healing. TNF-α and IL-1β stimulate the production of MMPs which cause degradation of growth factors. Wound fluid from the V.A.C.® is of interest when investigating the mechanisms by which V.A.C.® therapy aids in wound healing. We hypothesize that the clinical improvement in healing of chronic wounds by the V.A.C.® system occurs by a shift from a chronic cytotoxic environment to a more conducive acute healing wound environment. This study aims at understanding the molecular and mechanistic consequences of V.A.C.® therapy on chronic wound healing. Methods : Wound fluid collected from two patients with Stage IV pressure ulcers at baseline, 24hours, 72hours, and 7 days following V.A.C.® therapy. Concentrations of TNF-α, IL-1β, MMP-2, -3, -9, TIMP-2, and total protein were determined using ELISA. Results : TNF-α levels in wound fluids decreased from baseline levels in two patients following 3 days of treatment. Similarly, levels of MMP-3, MMP-9 and TIMP-2 decreased from baseline following 3 days of treatment. There were no consistent trends in IL-1β & MMP-2. Conclusion : The preliminary results from this study suggest that improved wound healing with V.A.C.® therapy is related to decreased levels of proinflammatory cytokines, MMPs and TIMP-2 in wound fluid.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The heliocentric and geocentric distances of the comet were ∼1.1 AU and ∼1.5 AU,respectively. We detected emission lines of the gas-phase molecules H2O, 4, C2H6, C2H2, HCN, and CO and derived absolute production rates and relative abundances for all species. We also used the 2-dimensional nature of the CSHELL data to investigate the spatial distribution of the molecules and find evidence that CO was derived at least partly from an extended source in the coma.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1572-9559Keywords: submillimeter astronomy ; heterodyne radiometry ; laser local oscillator ; Schottky diode mixer ; quasi-opticsSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract Observations of the CO J=6→5 transition at 691 GHz (434 μm) in new interstellar and planetary sources have been made. The heterodyne receiver uses an optically pumped laser local oscillator and a quasi-optical Schottky diode mixer, with measured noise temperatures consistently under 4000 K (double sideband). Continued improvements in system performance and antenna coupling have made possible the mapping of 434 μm emission from W3, and the detection of CO J=5→6 absorption in the atmosphere of Venus. A detailed description of the instrumentation and recent observational data are provided.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-4803Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision MechanicsNotes: Abstract The value of Knoop microhardness was obtained for crystals of SrF2, BaF2, NaCl and AgCl by indentation in various directions on several crystallographic planes. In all cases, the hardness is essentially dependent on the crystallographic direction along the long axis of the indentor and independent of the plane of indentation, as first reported by Garfinkle and Garlick for other cubic crystals. In addition, although the absolute value of hardness varies from one crystal to another, the hardness anisotropy was quite similar for all crystals. Since the primary slip mode is different among the crystals tested, it is concluded that hardness anisotropy cannot be used to determine the primary slip mode.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-4803Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision MechanicsNotes: Abstract Knoop microhardness measurements were made on the (11.0), (01.0) and (00.1) planes of the trigonal isostructural compounds lithium niobate and lithium tantalate. The data indicate uniform hardness in the 〈11.0〉 and 〈01.0〉 directions and greater hardness in the [00.1] direction. In accordance with previous findings of hardness anisotropy in materials with hexagonal crystal structure, the present data indicate preferred slip on basal planes. The ratio of hardness to the shear modulus C 66 is close to 0.1, which is usually found in covalent-bonded solids.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
