Publication Date: 2018-07-27Description: Es gibt mindestens acht Standards, denen Fragen in Fragebögen entsprechen sollten. (ICEÜbers)'There are at least 8 standards that survey questions should meet. One reason it is easy to write poor questions is that researchers focus on some standards but ignore others. A more complex problem is posed by the fact that designing a question that is good according to one standard can make it a poor question when judged against another standard. Third, typical pretest and question evaluation procedures do not provide information about all 8 standards. It is easy to ignore a standard if there is no information about it. Finally, researchers often are committed to questions that have been used previously, even when there is evidence that they are flawed. This paper presents the 8 standards, the ways in which they can be in conflict, the challenges of evaluating questions, and the implications for standard survey practice.' Published 2019Staff View FulltextPublication Date: 2019-02-07Description: To answer the question, "What are the best ways to communicate uncertainties to public audiences, at-risk communities, and stakeholders during public health emergency events?" we conducted a systematic review of published studies, grey literature, and media reports in English and other United Nations (UN) languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish. Almost 11,500 titles and abstracts were scanned of which 46 data-based primary studies were selected, which were classified into four methodological streams: Quantitative-comparison groups; Quantitative-descriptive survey; Qualitative; and Mixed-method and case-study. Study characteristics (study method, country, emergency type, emergency phase, at-risk population) and study findings (in narrative form) were extracted from individual studies. The findings were synthesized within methodological streams and evaluated for certainty and confidence. These within-method findings were next synthesized across methodological streams to develop an overarching synthesis of findings. The findings showed that country coverage focused on high and middle-income countries in Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania, and the event most covered was infectious disease followed by flood and earthquake. The findings also showed that uncertainty during public health emergency events is a multi-faceted concept with multiple components (e.g., event occurrence, personal and family safety, recovery efforts). There is universal agreement, with some exceptions, that communication to the public should include explicit information about event uncertainties, and this information must be consistent and presented in an easy to understand format. Additionally, uncertainty related to events requires a distinction between uncertainty information and uncertainty experience. At-risk populations experience event uncertainty in the context of many other uncertainties they are already experiencing in their lives due to poverty. Experts, policymakers, healthcare workers, and other stakeholders experience event uncertainty and misunderstand some uncertainty information (e.g., event probabilities) similar to the public. Media professionals provide event coverage under conditions of contradictory and inconsistent event information that can heighten uncertainty experience for all. Keywords: Sociology & anthropology ; News media, journalism, publishing ; Publizistische Medien, Journalismus,Verlagswesen ; Soziologie, Anthropologie ; Kommunikationssoziologie, Sprachsoziologie, Soziolinguistik ; Allgemeines, spezielle Theorien und Schulen, Methoden, Entwicklung und Geschichte der Kommunikationswissenschaften ; Basic Research, General Concepts and History of the Science of Communication ; Sociology of Communication, Sociology of Language, Sociolinguistics ; Katastrophe ; Öffentlichkeit ; Gesundheit ; Risiko ; Kommunikation ; Methode ; the public ; disaster ; communication ; risk ; health ; methodType: journal article, Zeitschriftenartikel -

Published 2010Staff View FulltextPublication Date: 2018-07-27Description: Objective: The developmental trajectory of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is variable. Utilizing a longitudinally assessed sample, we investigated the contribution of susceptibility gene variants, previously implicated through pooled or meta-analyses, to the developmental course of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder over time. Methods: 151 children (aged 6–12) who met diagnostic criteria for ADHD were assessed using research diagnostic interviews during childhood and 5 years later in adolescence. Severity was defined as total number of ADHD symptoms at baseline and reassessment. Association with variants at DRD4, DRD5, and the dopamine transporter gene, DAT was analyzed using linear regression. Results: As expected, affected individuals showed a decline in ADHD severity over time. The DRD4 48 bp VNTR 7-repeat and DRD5 CA(n) microsatellite marker 148 bp risk alleles were associated with persistent ADHD. Those possessing the DRD4 7 repeat risk allele showed less of a decline in severity at reassessment than those without the risk allele. Conclusions: Those carrying the DRD4 7 risk allele showed greater symptom severity at follow-up and less ADHD reduction over time. These findings support the hypothesis that some susceptibility genes for ADHD also influence its developmental course. Keywords: Psychology ; Psychologie ; ADHD; longitudinal; DRD4; DRD5; DAT1 ; Psychological Testing, Psychological Counseling, Psychological Methodology ; Psychological Disorders, Mental Health Treatment and Prevention ; psychologische Diagnostik und Beratung, psychologische Methoden ; psychische Störungen, Behandlung und PräventionType: journal article, Zeitschriftenartikel -

Publication Date: 2018-07-27Description: The paper shows how different organizations in the post-devolution period have erected internal borders within Wales, which reflect Welsh linguistic geographies and differing constructions of the 'true' extent of the Wales linguistic nation. Key to this debate has been the formation of the pressure group Cymuned. Cymuned's formation has led to numerous political and territorial tensions with the discourses promoted by established linguistic and political movements within Wales. Theoretically, the paper illustrates the importance of viewing borders and territories as spatial entities that are narrated in character. Empirically, it sheds light on the complexity of borders in post-devolution Wales. Keywords: Landscaping and area planning ; Social sciences, sociology, anthropology ; Sozialwissenschaften, Soziologie ; Städtebau, Raumplanung, Landschaftsgestaltung ; Ethnologie, Kulturanthropologie, Ethnosoziologie ; Raumplanung und Regionalforschung ; Area Development Planning, Regional Research ; Ethnology, Cultural Anthropology, EthnosociologyType: journal article, Zeitschriftenartikel -

Published 2024Staff ViewPublication Date: 2024-11-08Description: Although modern data-driven campaigning (DDC) is not entirely new, scholars have typically relied on reports and interviewers of practitioners to understand its use. However, the advent of public ad libraries from Meta and Google provides an opportunity to measure the scope and variation in DDC practice in advertising across different types of sponsors and within sponsors across platforms. Using textual and audiovisual processing, we create a database of ads from the 2022 U.S. elections. These data allow us to create an index that quantifies the extent of DDC at the level of the sponsor and platform. This index takes into account both the number of unique creatives placed and the similarity across those creatives. In addition, we explore the impact of sponsor resources, the office being sought, the competitiveness of the race, and the goal of the ad on the measure of DDC sophistication. Ultimately, our research establishes a measurement strategy for DDC that can be applied across ad sponsors, campaigns, parties and event countries. Understanding the extent of DDC is vital for policy discussions surrounding the regulation of microtargeting and data privacy. Keywords: Politikwissenschaft ; Publizistische Medien, Journalismus,Verlagswesen ; Political science ; News media, journalism, publishing ; Data-driven campaigning; digital campaigning; election campaigns; multimodal content analysis; political advertising ; politische Willensbildung, politische Soziologie, politische Kultur ; interaktive, elektronische Medien ; Political Process, Elections, Political Sociology, Political Culture ; Interactive, electronic Media ; Wahlkampf ; politische Kommunikation ; USA ; Werbemittel ; Datenschutz ; Digitale Medien ; election campaign ; political communication ; United States of America ; advertising material ; data protection ; digital mediaType: Zeitschriftenartikel, journal article -

Patch testing with commercially-available CAPB has yielded occasional reactions indicative of allergic contact dermatitis. To determine if subjects with previous positive patch tests would react in provocative use tests of products containing CAPB, and to study various contaminants in commercial CAPB supplies for allergenicity in these subjects. 10 subjects previously positive to CAPB on patch testing used a hair shampoo, hand soap, and body wash containing CAPB for 1–6 weeks or until a reaction developed. Later, they were patch tested to 2 different purity grades of CAPB and 3 possible manufacturing contaminants (dimethylaminopropylamine, amidoamine, and sodium monochloroacetate). 7 of the 10 subject developed dermatitis from 1 or more CAPB-containing products at some point during the study 9 of the 10 use-test subjects were then patch tested, and 6 of these subjects showed a reaction to amidoamine, (0.1% aq.). None reacted to dimethylaminopropylamine (0.1% pet.). 1 subject reacted to CAPB but not to amidoamine. In the follow-up patch testing with CAPB that was free of amidoamine, there were no positive reactions. Most subjects who were patch-test-positive showed a reaction when using CAPB-containing skin and hair care products. The chemical amidoamine, which is used in the synthesis of CAPB and which is a known contaminant of CAPB preparations, is likely to be the actual sensitizer in most cases rather than CAPB itself. The results do not rule out the possibility shin CAPB itself may be an allergen in rare cases.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1992Staff ViewISSN: 1619-1560Keywords: Laser Doppler fluxmetry ; Urothelial blood flowSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract This paper presents preliminary data on a new method for testing the sympathetic innervation of the urothelium. A flexible laser Doppler probe was introduced into the urethra of two females and two male subjects. The percentage fall in laser Doppler flux following generalized sympathetic stimulation by taking an inspiratory gasp was measured. This resulted in 36%, 32%, 68% and 34% mean drop in urothelial blood flux. In the female subjects, the probe was advanced into the bladder and the procedure repeated, and the gasp resulted in 60% and 83% drop in flux. With laser Doppler fluxmetry, fall in microcirculatory blood flow associated with a generalized increase in sympathetic tone, therefore can be demonstrated. This method may be useful in the assessment of the integrity of the sympathetic innervation of the urothelium in patients with suspected autonomic dysfunction of the genitourinary tract.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
