Pemphigus-like syndromes have been reported to occur in individuals after exposure to a variety of drugs, but pemphigus caused by carbamazepine is not common. We found that anti-Dsg1 and anti-Dsg3 antibody titres were increased in three individuals administered carbamazepine. Antibody titres against Dsgs 1 and 3 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Of 42 serum samples (25 patients administered carbamazepine, eight patients administered valproic acid and nine healthy volunteers) tested by ELISA, three patients administered carbamazepine showed positive reactivity against both Dsg1 and Dsg3. The patient with the highest titre against Dsg1 and Dsg3 (the index values of anti-Dsg1 and anti-Dsg3 were 79.3 and 86.4, respectively) was a 23-year-old woman (Case 1). The other two patients with positive reactivity were a 5-year-old boy (Case 2) and a 65-year-old man (Case 3). In addition, indirect immunofluorescence study showed intercellular antibodies to the cell surface of the whole epidermis with a titre of 1 : 64 in Case 1 and 1 : 2 in Cases 2 and 3. However, no skin or mucosal involvement was found in any of these cases. There was no difference in the serum concentrations of carbamazepine between the three positive cases and the 22 negative cases of carbamazepine administration. From these facts, the lack of skin diseases may be explained by relatively low values of anti-Dsg 1 and 3 antibodies in Cases 2 and 3. However, it cannot be excluded that undefined exogenous and/or endogenous factors are involved in an outbreak of pemphigus. The remaining interpopulation variation was attributable to: (1) differences between northern (the northern Sea of Okhotsk, eastern Kamchatka Peninsula and western Kamchatka Peninsula) and southern (Hokkaido Island, Kuril Islands and Sakhalin Island) populations; (2) differences between the southern areas; (3) low variation among populations within some areas. The pattern contrasted strongly with that observed for Asian even-broodline populations, which had a strong structure, possibly related to geographic and oceanographic influences. Isolation-by-distance analyses of each of the two broodlines showed a stronger relationship (x 4·8) among even- than odd-broodline populations. Allele frequency differences between even- and odd-broodlines reflected the reproductive isolation of the broodlines. However, there were no fixed frequency differences which, considered with the differing population structures, suggests that migration-drift equilibrium has not yet obtained in one or both broodlines. The structural differences also suggest it is likely that the even- and odd-broodlines are of different ages and that one is derived from the other. Immature, non-treated controls in both species showed no preference for the urine of ovulated females. These results suggest that, for both species, the releaser pheromones that attract males in the urine are species-specific. During the reproductive season, urine of mature females contains a releaser pheromone which acts as a sex attractant for spermiating mature male parr. The releaser pheromone in mature female urine is one or more low molecular weight substances (less than 10 000) soluble in ether under basic conditions. The potential smolts were not significantly greater in mean fork length and body weight than the potential parr in late August of the first year, but they then grew faster until March of the second year. As a result, the potential smolts formed the upper mode of the bimodal length distribution after February. Especially in autumn (October and November) the specific growth rates of potential smolts were significantly greater than those of parr, and the bimodality in growth rate distribution was more distinct for males than females. These suggest that there are two groups having different growth rates in autumn of the first year and that sufficient growth in this period may play an important role in smoltification in the following spring.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Recently, it was reported that genes involved in tissue morphogenesis, such as sonic hedgehog or patched, were found to be mutated in BCC, suggesting the involvement of those molecules in the pathogenesis of this tumour. Furthermore, there is evidence that the Wnt-mediated signalling pathway may be one of the downstream targets of sonic hedgehog-mediated signalling, which has led us to focus on molecular events on the Wnt pathway in BCC. Among the signal transducers involved in the Wnt pathway, it is clear that β-catenin plays a pivotal role in the promotion of morphogenesis and cell growth. In respect to this, it has been reported that, in particular circumstances, as in colorectal cancers, β-catenin migrates to the nuclei, where it exerts an ability to activate the transcription of various genes. Objectives To investigate the cellular distribution of β-catenin in skin tumours, in particular, in BCC. Methods Twenty skin biopsy specimens derived from BCC, 10 from inflammatory skin diseases and five from squamous cell carcinomas were immunostained with an antibody directed against β-catenin. Results Fourteen of the 20 BCC samples tested showed nuclear localization of β-catenin, while none of the other samples gave rise to positive nuclear staining. Conclusions Nuclear localization of β-catenin is a characteristic feature of BCC; this suggests its tumorigenic role in this tumour.
