Measurements of hysteresis and Barkhausen effect (BE) have been made on 0.1 wt % C Fe–C alloys subjected to strain-controlled fatigue at various strain amplitudes. A relationship between the fatigue lifetime and strain amplitude was observed. The hysteresis properties of the samples cycled at different strain amplitudes were found to vary systematically with expended fatigue life. These properties showed significant changes in the initial and final stages of fatigue, while between these stages they remained stabilized. In the stable stage the remanence was found to decrease, whereas the coercivity increased with increasing strain amplitude. Variations in BE signal during fatigue were found to be closely related to the microstructural changes observed on the sample surface. These results are interpreted in the context of the changes in microstructure caused by fatigue damage, and the effects of the formation and propagation of fatigue cracks on the field distribution and domain structure in the vicinity of the cracks. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes:
A study of the effects of microstructural changes on domain structure and magnetic properties as a result of fatigue has been made on Fe–C alloys subjected to either cold work, stress-relief annealing, or heat treatment that produced a ferritic/pearlitic structure. The magnetic properties varied with stress cycling depending on the initial condition of the samples. Variations in coercivity in the initial stage of fatigue were closely related to the changes in dislocation structure. In the intermediate stage of fatigue the observed refinement of domain structures was related to the development of dislocation cell structures and formation of slip bands. In the final stage of fatigue the remanence and maximum permeability decreased dramatically, and this rate of decrease was dependent on the crack propagation rate. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Co(11¯00)/Cr(211) and Co(112¯0)/Cr(100) multilayers have been simultaneously prepared on MgO(110) and MgO(100) substrates, respectively, by molecular beam epitaxy. They show however distinct magnetic anisotropic behavior which coincides with their magneto–crystalline anisotropy. Magneto–optical Kerr effect shows the existence of a unique easy axis and strong in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in Co(11¯00)/Cr(211) multilayers, which is induced by the well-defined hexagonal crystalline of the Co(11¯00) layers. For Co(112¯0)/Cr(100) multilayers, on the other hand, an in-plane biaxial magnetic anisotropy is found due to the bicrystalline structure of the Co(112¯0) layers. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

We report on several important features of GaAs polarized electron source operation. Specifically we point out the beneficial effect on crystal lifetime produced by the constant low-level application of cesium from a dispenser embedded in an extraction anode. Using our experience in low-energy polarized electron-atom scattering as a reference, we also discuss the importance of frequent energy calibrations of GaAs electron beams for high-resolution investigations.

    Notes:
We report on the development of several operating procedures that promise to make GaAs photoemission electron sources easier to construct, more reliable to operate, and more amenable to use in dynamic vacuum systems. We describe in particular a method for "ohmically'' heating a 〈100〉 crystal of GaAs under vacuum to approximately 600 °C. We also discuss our observations of the role of oxygen in the activation of the crystal surface, the use of continuous cesiation, and of the performance of the crystal under varying vacuum conditions.
