ISSN: 1434-601XKeywords: 25.85.JgSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract Photofission cross sections of209Bi,238U and232Th are very different, both in magnitude and in their dependence on the incident photon energy. In fact, in the quasi-deuteron energy region,σ f (Bi)〈10−2 σ f (U), withσ f (Th) having intermediate values. Alsoσ f (Bi) increases monotonically vs.E γ whileσ f (U) andσ f (Th) (above 75 MeV) are approximatively constant. We propose here a parametrization of photofission in the quasi-deuteron region, which fits, up toE γ ⋃m π , the photofission cross sections of these three nuclei.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1434-6052Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract. Final-state $q \bar q$ interactions give origin to nonzero values of the off-diagonal element $\rho_{1,-1}$ of the helicity density matrix of vector mesons produced in $e^+ e^-$ annihilations, as has been confirmed by recent OPAL data on $\phi$ , $D^*$ , and $K^*$ . New predictions are given for $\rho_{1,-1}$ of several mesons produced at large $x_{_\mathrm{E}}$ and small $p_\mathrm{T}$ – i.e., collinear with the parent jet – in the annihilation of polarized $e^+$ and $e^-$ ; the results depend strongly on the elementary dynamics and allow further nontrivial tests of the standard model.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1434-6052Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract. Final state $q\bar q$ interactions may give origin to non-zero values of the off-diagonal element $\rho_{1,-1}$ of the helicity density matrix of vector mesons produced in $e^+ e^-$ annihilations, as confirmed by recent OPAL data on $\phi$ and $D^*$ 's. Predictions are given for $\rho_{1,-1}$ of several mesons produced at large $z$ and small $p_T$ , i.e. collinear with the parent jet; the values obtained for $\phi$ and $D^*$ are in agreement with data. The fragmentation functions of quarks and gluons into photons are studied beyond the Leading Logarithm approximation. We address the nature of the initial conditions of the evolution equation solutions and study problems related to factorization scheme invariance. The possibility of measuring these distributions in LEP experiments is discussed, and a comparison with existing data is made.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1434-6052Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract. Predictions for the single transverse spin asymmetry $A_N$ in semi-inclusive DIS processes are given; non-negligible values of $A_N$ may arise from spin effects in the fragmentation of a polarized quark into a final hadron with a transverse momentum $\vec k_\perp$ with respect to the jet axis, the so-called Collins effect. The elementary single spin asymmetry of the fragmenting quark has been fixed in a previous paper, by fitting data on $p^\uparrow p \to \pi X$ , and by assuming that the QCD factorization theorem holds also when transverse momenta are taken into account. The predictions given here are based on the assumption that the Collins effect is the only cause of the observed single spin asymmetries in $p^\uparrow p \to \pi X$ . Eventual spin and $\vec k_\perp$ dependences in the quark distribution functions, the so-called Sivers effect, are also discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1434-6052Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract. We calculate, within the pQCD parton model at leading orders, the expression of the polarization P of spin 1/2 hadrons (typically $\Lambda$ baryons), produced in polarized semi-inclusive DIS in all possible cases in which weak interactions are involved. We discuss how to gather new information on fragmentation and distribution functions and give numerical estimates in the cases for which data are or will soon be available.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
