We present a method for characterizing liquid-solid phase transitions by using an acoustic shear horizontal (SH) plate mode sensor. The sensor consists of a Y-cut quartz plate provided with suitable interdigital transducers on the lower surface. To study the temporal evolution of a phase transition, the liquid is deposited in a thin layer on the upper surface and the SH mode attenuation is observed as a function of time during a programed temperature change. With this sensor the theoretical time resolution is about 1 μs. Experimental results are presented for the liquid-solid transition for deionized water, tap water, and 90%/10% mixture of tap water and ethanol, measured with an instrument time resolution of 50 ms.

In the presence of an electrical field, the mechanical behavior of thin films of copolymer of vinylydene-fluoride and trifluoroethylene varies with the annealing temperature. If the film is annealed below the melting point of the copolymer, we observe, before any poling, an electrostriction effect mixed with a piezoelectric one. If the film is annealed above the melting point we observe only an electrostriction effect before the poling and a piezoelectric one after. The high value of the electrostriction coefficient obtained before poling could be used for actuators application. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes:
This article presents an acoustic wave viscometer using shear bulk waves excited by interdigital transducers on quartz. The attenuation of acoustic waves at the quartz-liquid interface is associated with liquid viscosity. Good agreement is found between theoretical results and experiments. The device can be used for viscosity measurements up to 600 cP. For higher viscosity the high-frequency rigidity modulus must be taken into account.
