Summary Ota's naevus is among the dermal melanocytoses that show a distinct pattern involving skin innervated by the trigeminal nerve. Most cases present at birth or manifest clinically in early childhood. Cases of acquired lesions in adult onset have been reported rarely. We present two cases of late onset Ota's naevus which were confirmed by skin biopsies. Both patients underwent Q-switched alexandrite laser treatment with a dose of 8.0 J/cm2 given four or five times at 6 weekly intervals and showed some improvement.

Control of dimension and position of Ge dots on a nanoscale is accomplished by combining Stranski–Krastanov growth mode with selective epitaxial growth technique in windows surrounded by SiO2 films on Si substrates. The dimension and the number of these dots are controlled by the size of the windows, and a single dot is grown in a window with the size of less than 300 nm. Moreover, clear phonon-resolved photoluminescence (PL) is observed from the Ge dots, reflecting the improved uniformity in their dimensions. The PL energy is found to be strongly dependent on the dot's dimension. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Strain effects in a strained SiGe/Si quantum well induced by self-assembled Ge islands have been studied by varying the Ge coverage. The strain by the Ge islands induces a complicated behavior in photoluminescence spectra depending on the Ge coverage. The Ge islands give the enhanced local strain to the underlying structures with the increase of the Ge coverage, at the early stage of the growth. However, as the Ge coverage increases the enhanced local strain does not continue being reinforced but is limited after once being retrogressed. These results are discussed in terms of elastic deformation due to the lattice mismatch between Si and Ge and the lattice relaxation in Ge islands. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

The effects of field application rates, number of applications, interval to harvest after field treatment with ethylenebisdithiocarbamate (EBDC) fungicide and the effect of washing on the levels of the residue ethylenethiourea (ETU) in canned spinach were studied. High rates of applied EBDC high number of field applications and applications closer to harvest time resulted in canned spinach with high levels of ETU. Washing with water before processing significantly reduced the levels of ETU in spinach from all the field treatments, but washing with a solution of sodium hypochlorite and a mild detergent reduced even further the levels of ETU.

Ethylenethiourea (ETU) residue originating from ethylenebisdithiocarbamate (EBDC) fungicides sprayed in the field was evaluated in canned spinach. The effect of leaf type, mechanical injury, holding temperature and washing solution on levels of ETU were studied. A smooth leaf cultivar had lower ETU residues than savoy and semisavoy. Leaf-injured spinach had higher ETU residues than the intact control. Spinach washed in water reduced the ETU level to less than 5 ppm, while addition of sodium hypochlorite (300 ppm) and a basic detergent (0.1%) further reduced ETU levels to less than 1 ppm. Increasing the washing time from 1 to 3 min did not significantly reduce the residual ETU levels. High holding temperatures (21°C) resulted in canned spinach with low but not significantly different levels of ETU as compared to low temperatures (2°C).

SUMMARY– As part of a coordinated research program on internal can corrosion, the action of nitrates on tinplate was studied in model systems simulating foods of varying acidities. Detinning rates were measured in citrate buffered nitrate solutions ranging in pH from 3.0–7.0. At pH values less than about 5.2–5.5 the detinning is extremely rapid, with slower rates at higher pH values. Nitrate concentrations of 125 ppm in pH 4 buffers completely detinned cans in about 2 months at ambient temperatures. Ammonia is the principal nitrate reduction product in the pH range of acid products. Nitrous oxide is also produced and acts as an effective detinner at pH 4 and 5. Nitrogen may also be produced at pH 5.

Abstract Background. To identify variable prognostic factors and analyze failure patterns in uterine cervix cancer after radical operation and adjuvant radiotherapy, a retrospective analysis was undertaken. Methods. We analyzed 124 patients with uterine cervix cancer, FIGO stage IB, IIA, and IIB, treated with radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection followed by adjuvant radiotherapy between May 1985 and May 1995. Minimum follow-up period was 24 months. All these patients were treated with full-dose external radiotherapy using a linear accelerator or high-dose-rate intracavitary radiation. Results. Overall 5-year survival rate and relapse-free survival rate were 75.4% and 73.5%, respectively. Significant prognostic factors for relapse-free survival were wall involvement thickness, lymph node location and number, parametrium involvement, tumor size, stage, uterine body involvement, and vaginal resection margin involvement. By multivariate analysis, lymph node metastasis, tumor size, and vaginal resection margin involvement were significant prognostic factors. Treatment-related failure occurred in 33 cases. In stage IIB, 5-year relapse-free survival rate was only 56%, and 9 of 22 patients had recurrence. Conclusion. Postoperative radiotherapy results are good for patients with relatively low risk factors, but the results are poor for patients with multiple high-risk factors or stage IIB. To control recurrence for patients with high-risk factors, postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy alone is not a sufficient treatment method. Considering cost-effectiveness, it may be reasonable to treat with primary radical radiotherapy for patients with stage IIB cervical cancer and poor prognostic factors instead of a radical operation and adjuvant radiotherapy or chemotherapy regimen. Further investigation should be done.

Abstract A simple model of an electrolyte matrix for use in a phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) has been proposed. It has important features in the vertical direction. Acid absorbency, bubble pressure and current density as a function of porosity and pore-size distribution were calculated. The calculated values were compared with the real values obtained from a matrix made by rolling and tape casting. The tendency of the properties in the model concurred with the real matrix. Predictions were made for the best performance. The results were a porosity of 80%, a composition having 20% of 0.01–0.1 μm pores and 75% of 0.1–1 μm and 5% of 1–10 μm pores, the thickness of the matrix being 100 μm and the particle size 1.5 μm. It is expected that these theoretical results could be helpful in making a real matrix.
