Tale incorporazione viene attribuita alla sintesi di DNA metabolico.Notes: Conclusions In the amphigonic females ofM. viciae an active nuclear incorporation of thymidine H3 occurs during growth which may be attributed to continuous endomitotic divisions. However, even when the nurse cells are functioning fully, and when the nuclei appear to have achieved maximum development, incorporation of the thymidine H3 continues, and, as was seen in other insects, does not affect all the nuclei. Incorporation would therefore seem to be due not to the continuance of endomitotic divisions but rather to the synthesis of metabolic DNA. On the other hand, even if one supposes that in the nurse cells of the amphigonic ovary endomitotic processes continue right up to the end of vitellogenesis of the amphigonic winter egg, this is quite out of the question so far as the parthenogenetic ovary is concerned. Diploid nurse cells are functioning continuously, since in a parthenogenetic ovary a great many ovocytes reach maturity one after the other, passing through all stages of development to produce the embryos. The nurse cells always retain, in such cases, their characteristic appearance right from the beginning of their differentiation3 and therefore thymidine H3 incorporation cannot be ascribed to continuous endomitotic divisions. It can therefore be assumed that the active synthesis which occurs in the nuclei does not concern genetically stable DNA but a metabolic DNA. The above results thus add new weight to the assumption by former authors that metabolic DNA may be synthesized in the nurse cells of amphigonic insects as well.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Our overall objective was to determine whether the levels of metals were sufficiently high to confound the association between chlorinated hydrocarbons, which are elevated in eggs and juvenile plasma, and reproductive impairment. The concentrations of all metals were relatively low compared to those reported for alligators from elsewhere in Florida and the southeastern United States, suggesting that reproductive impairment is not due to metals and that metals pose no health risk to the alligators. We also wanted to determine whether skin, biopsied tail muscle, or tail tip tissue, all easily collected from live alligators, could be used as surrogate measures of internal tissue loads. Concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese, mercury, and selenium in liver were highly correlated with at least one of the three biopsied tissues. Only tin showed no significant positive correlation. No single tissue gave a high prediction of liver levels for all metals, although skin gave the highest correlation for mercury, and tail muscle gave the best overall correlation for lead and cadmium.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-0703Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Energy, Environment Protection, Nuclear Power EngineeringMedicineNotes: Abstract Seasonal changes in metal (Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn) concentrations were observed in the digestive gland of the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, from both a polluted and a non-polluted population. Digestive gland of mussels from the polluted site showed metal concentrations appreciably higher than in non-polluted organisms, especially for Pb (up to 160 μg/g d.w.), Mn (up to 300 μg/g d.w.), and Fe (up to 8,500 μg/g d.w.), whereas the two populations showed maximum mean values, respectively, of 34 and 20 μg/g d.w. for Cu and 170 and 120 μg/g d.w. for Zn. Over 1 year (1991), differences between maximum and minimum values were moderate only in the unpolluted organisms. During gametogenesis, while the metal concentrations (expressed as μg/g dry weight) decreased in the digestive gland, the tissue burden (as μg) in that organ remained nearly constant or increased slightly. The apparent decrease in metal concentrations was probably due to the penetration of gonadic tissues into the digestive gland during gametogenesis, which biologically diluted metal concentrations in mussels from both the polluted and unpolluted populations. The effect of mussel size on trace metal concentrations in the digestive gland was demonstrated during different stages of the reproductive cycle. Higher concentrations were found in smaller organisms; however, during the spawning period, due to the fact that this is not a synchronous process within a population, the organisms exhibit a high variability in digestive gland weight which can mask this relationship when digestive gland weight is used as a size-index and as a parameter of the trace metal digestive gland burden.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-1793Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyNotes: Abstract The functional morphology of kidney cells and the intracellular localization of metal storage sites were studied by electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis in the Antarctic scallop Adamussium colbecki (Smith) collected at Gerlache Inlet, Terra Nova Bay, Antarctic in December 1990. Kidney cells of A. colbecki show the same basic cytoarchitecture of other Pectinidae, but the nephrolithes localized in the main vacuoles show a low degree of mineralization. The sites of heavy metal storage are: (1) the main vacuole of the renal cell, where Fe, Zn and Cu are associated with concretions, (2) the basal membranes and (3) the lysosomes of amoebocytes, in which Ag, Se, Fe and Cu occur in electron-dense particles. Finally a hypothesis for the formation and role of the Ag−Se rich particles is discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Here, different equisingularity conditions are analyzed and compared, based on one of the following requirements: 1) each member of the the family has the same desingularization tree, 2) the family admits a simultaneous desingularization, 3) a naturally associated family of curves is equisingular. Similar conditions had been investigated, in the context of Complex Local Analytic Geometry, by J. J. Risler.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-2056Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyNotes: Abstract The scallop Adamussium colbecki can be profitably used for monitoring Antarctic coastal environments but its utility would be increased if chemical analyses of pollutants were integrated with data on their biological effects. Since oxidative stress is a common pathway of toxicity induced by xenobiotics, a preliminary biochemical characterization was carried out on the antioxidant system of this species and baseline data collected for future assessment of the anthropogenic impact in this remote area. The digestive gland and gills were investigated for levels of glutathione and the activity of several glutathione-dependent and antioxidant enzymes: gluthathione reductase, EC 1.6.4.2; glyoxalase I, EC 4.4.1.5; glyoxalase II, EC 3.1.2.6; gluthathione S-transferases, EC 2.5.1.18; Se-dependent, EC 1.11.1.9 and Se-independent, EC 2.5.1.18 gluta-thione peroxidases; catalase, EC 1.11.1.6; and super-oxide dismutase, EC 1.15.1.1. The same enzymatic activities were measured for comparison in the Mediterranean molluscs Mytilus galloprovincialis and Pecten jacobaeus. Very high levels of glutathione S-transferases were found in the digestive gland of both species of scallop compared to mussels, suggesting the importance of different feeding behaviour among these molluscs. However, catalase activity, much higher in Adamussium colbecki than in the Mediterranean molluscs, may represent a biochemical adaptation to the Antarctic marine environment with high levels of dissolved oxygen. Enzymes from the Antarctic species appeared to be generally more active at low temperatures but, with a few exceptions, their activities increased at higher temperatures.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
