We report on K-band ferromagnetic resonance studies made on a sequence of PtCo multilayer films. Two principal results emerge: (a) the angular dependence of the resonance fields can be fitted only by a combination of second and fourth order anisotropy: E = Keff sin2 θ+ K4 sin4 θ, and (b) an additional resonance was observed at fields below the major resonance position in some of the specimens. Although these latter spectra were observed about the surface normal only over a restricted angular range, we were able to fit these lines as well with a combination of second- and fourth-order anisotropy. In each case the integrated absorption intensity of the secondary spectrum, when present, was comparable to that of the primary resonance. The physical origin of these additional spectra is not yet entirely clear.

A low research base and inadequate research utilization are seen as obstacles to acquiring credible professional status for nursing. During recent years there has been some debate, both in Europe and in North America, about the extent to which nurses base their practice on research. This paper reviews recent empirical studles about research utilization, then goes on to describe a small pilot study carried out in the UK to attempt to measure research utilization among general nurses at F/G grade. A large-scale, generalizable survey using sirmlar methods is proposed to build on the knowledge gained from the pilot study. Tentative findings are put forward that show a positive attitude towards research among British clinical nurses. Specialist nurse advisors and research-based protocols are helpful to nurses in accessing research literature. The biggest deterrent to research utilization appears to be lack of perceived autonomy — some nurses feel unable to challenge medical colleagues and organizational managers and so fail to make use of research findings available to them. Significant differences are found between the two hospitals studied in the characteristics of their nursing staff, particularly in relation to their research awareness and degree of perceived autonomy.

Abstract Oxfendazole (OFZ) was chemically modified to 1-n-butyl carbamoyl OFZ (C4-OFZ) in an attempt to improve the solubility of OFZ and enable it to be administered by injection. After intramuscular injection to sheep and cattle, C4-OFZ was metabolised to OFZ which resulted in higher plasma OFZ concentrations that persisted for a considerably longer period than those observed following administration of OFZ orally. The anthelmintic efficacy of injected C4-OFZ was tested, in sheep, against strains ofTrichostrongylus colubriformis,Haemonchus contortus andOstertagia circumcincta, which were highly resistant to benzimidazoles. In all cases, the C4-OFZ treatment showed a significant improvement in efficacy over the conventional oral OFZ drench.
