Root-mean-square roughness at both the top surface and buried interface is determined, as is the (complex-valued) x-ray refractive index of the SiO2 heterostructure material for photons in the energy range 400–800 eV. Knowledge of the SiO2 and Si refractive indices allows the oxygen atomic scattering factor to be deduced at these energies. Evidence that one of the four thermally grown structures may consist of more than just a single homogeneous overlayer is also examined.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Mulatta) subjected to ventriculocisternal perfusion. The efflux coefficients, kVE, at tracer concentrations (3–5 m) in the perfusate were 0.0487 ml/min and 0.0325 ml/min for [14C]DOPA and [14C]dopamine, respectively. Carrier DOPA (10 mm) in the perfusate decreased the efflux of [14C]DOPAsignificantly, but carrier dopamine had no appreciable effect on the clearance of [14C]dopamine. These findings suggest that DOPA is cleared from CSF in part by a saturable mechanism which may be located in the choroid plexus, whereas dopamine leaves the ventricular system by passive diffusion. Radioactivity in the caudate nucleus immediately adjacent to the perfused ventricle averaged 15.5 % and 12.6% of the radioactivity in the perfusates with [14C]DOPA or [14C]dopamine, respectively. These distribution percentages were similar to those found for various extracellular indicators after ventriculocisternal perfusion and may indicate that the efflux of intraventricularly-administered exogenous DOPA and dopamine occurs in part through extracellular channels.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

It is demonstrated that working with presently established ranges for the Γ-L coupling coefficient, the existence of a velocity overshoot at moderate fields cannot be exactly predicted. The role of negative velocity electrons in the initial transient for short wavelength excitation is also demonstrated. Details of an actual experiment are described and evaluated against a model which incorporates the Monte Carlo simulation into a transmission line structure with a frequency-dependent characteristic impedance. The results demonstrate that an appropriately designed experiment can observe subpicosecond carrier transport transients.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1964Staff ViewISSN: 1750-3841Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionProcess Engineering, Biotechnology, Nutrition TechnologyNotes: A method is described for the separation and quantitative determination in a variety of foods of the following 5′-nucleotides; eytidine-5′-phosphate, adenosine-5′-phosphate, uridine-5′-phosphate, inosine-5′-phosphate, and guan-osine-5′-phosphate. This procedure employs a Dowex 1 ion-exchange resin in the formate form to adsorb and concentrate the nucleotides from an aqueous extract of the food sample. The nucleotides are separated and eluted in the order previously given by means of a gradient elution system, consisting of water—formic acid-sodium formate. The method gives complete resolution of the 5′-nucleotides from each other, but not from their corresponding 2′- and 3′-forms. Therefore, following chromatographic separation, the 5′-nucleotides are determined calorimetrically in the presence of the 2′- and 3′-nncleotides by oxidation with periodate and reaction of the oxidation products with 2, 4-dinitrophenylhydrazine.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

A recently published randomized controlled trial (RCT) showed that adherence to infusion diary record keeping was improved by the use of handheld computers. In this study, attitudes to record keeping were explored and patient preferences regarding the method of recording determined for the patients who participated in the trial. Qualitative study consisting of individual semi-structured interviews with 20 severely affected patients with haemophilia who participated in an RCT. Individuals were purposefully sampled based on their recent method of record keeping and whether child or adult. Analysis employed a constant comparative method to identify key themes from the data. Most individuals (19 of 20, 95%) considered record keeping to be important. They readily identified reasons to keep records: to benefit themselves, their families, clinical staff, product distributors and manufacturers. Keeping records helps them: feel a part of the health care team; have confidence they would be notified of product recalls; review their past history; improve their ability to advocate for themselves and improve communication among all parties. Record keeping, particularly when using paper diaries, can be burdensome and a challenge to maintain consistently. All 10 individuals (100%) who had used both paper diaries and handheld computers preferred the latter. Most patients understand that record keeping can be of benefit to them. Clinics can use this knowledge to inspire other patients by developing educational programmes that de-emphasize authority. In addition, given the evidence of both patients’ preference for handheld computers, and the effectiveness of this approach documented in an RCT, switching to handheld computers is likely to improve record keeping.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
