    Description / Table of Contents:
    Notes:
Summary The results of treatment in 252 carcinomas of the colon, aboral of the left flexure and 60 resections of the rectum, some with abdominal and some with sacral anastomoses, are reported. All the patients had been admitted for treatment to the Surgical University Clinic, Tilbingen, between 1955 and 1967. Of 168 cases where radical resection was possible, 139 were operated according to Schloffer's 3-stage method, and 29 had one-stage operations. Of 139 patients who underwent 3-stage operations, one died (=0.7% prim. op. mortality) and of the 29 primary resections, 3 patients died (=10% mortality). On comparing this with the corresponding literature, it is shown that the laborious Schloffer method gives maximum safety, while the total number of resections performed is kept high (72.5%). Long-term results are given, related to the stage of the tumour (according to the TNM classification) and based on 5-year survival curves. 73% of the patients operated on in Stages I and II survived the 5-year survival line, but only 40% of the patients treated in Stage III and 16% of those treated in Stage IV survived the 5 years. 55% of all the patients who underwent radical resection reached the 5-year limit.

    Notes:
Summary Whereas substantial evidence indicates that the majority of glioma patients make humoral immune responses to their own tumours, the evidence that glioma patients make significant cellular immune responses is more tenuous and controversial. In order to study those properties of human gliomas that might contribute to their ability to escape cell-mediated immune attack, we have examined the ability of cultured human glioma cells to elicit allogeneic cytolytic lymphocyte responses in vitro. Five of ten glioma lines were unable to elicit allogeneic cytolytic lymphocyte responses in mixed lymphocyte-tumour cultures, despite the presence of serologically detectable alloantigens on the surface of the glioma cells. Analysis of the reasons why certain glioma lines failed to stimulate cytolytic lymphocyte responses revealed three distinct mechanisms by which human gliomas may escape cellular immune attack: 1. a defect in immunogenicity which can be overcome by “help” from an allogeneic mixed lymphocyte reaction, 2. the secretion of a protective mucopolysaccharide coat, and 3. the production of macromolecular immunosuppressive substance(s). The implications of these findings for the immunotherapy of human gliomas are discussed.

Abstract We report the results of a parental questionnaire concerning possible etiological and teratological factors, such as exposure to herbicides, in the development of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). The herbicide Nitrofen interferes with lung development in rats, can induce diaphragmatic hernia and greatly resembles thyroid hormone. No association with the studied teratogens nor with maternal thyroid dysfunction was found. The questionnaire was completed by 33 parents whose baby had CDH, and by 43 couples whose baby had oesophageal atresia. The resemblance of Nitrofen to thyroid hormone, a well-known growth factor for the developing lung, is of particular interest from a pathogenetic point of view in the development of CDH.

Abstract Plasma cortisol and erythrocyte Na-K ATPase, ouabain sensitive K+ influx, lithium, sodium and potassium concentrations were measured twice when patients were on placebo and twice when they were on lithium therapy. The erythrocyte Na-K ATPase was significantly higher during the lithium than during the placebo treated period, whereas the other biochemical values measured showed no significant difference between the two phases.

    Notes:
Summary Antiischemic effects of β1-blocking agents are based on intrinsic negative inotropic and chronotropic properties. Partial β1-agonistic activity, although useful in preserving cardiac function, may counteract such antischemic properties by modulating the intrinsic negative cardiac effects of beta-blockade. To investigate the acute hemodynamic and antiischemic profile of epanolol, a cardioselective β1-antagonist and partial agonist, 20 patients with left coronary artery disease underwent two incremental atrial pacing tests, 45 minutes before (APST I) and 15 minutes after (APST II) 4 mg intravenous epanolol, administered over 5 minutes. Additional measurements were carried out at 1, 3, 5, 10, and 15 minutes after epanolol, at basal and fixed heart rates. Epanolol immediately reduced heart rate with a maximum of 10% at 15 minutes and decreased contractility (Vmax) by 7% (both p〈.05), whereas cardiac output fell temporarily by 9% (p〈.05). Other hemodynamic parameters did not change, except for a significant 11% reduction in myocardial oxygen demand. Despite comparable pacing conditions, both the double product and contractility decreased significantly less during APST II, resulting in a 17% lower myocardial oxygen consumption (p〈.05). Myocardial ischemia was markedly reduced, indicated by normalization of lactate metabolism [lactate extraction 16±7% vs. −7±8% (APST I)], less ST depression (21%), and modulation of LV end-diastolic pressure postpacing (all p〈.05 vs. APST I), whereas angina was absent or less in 14 patients. None of the patients reported an adverse effect. Thus, under resting conditions intravenous epanolol induces moderate, short-lasting negative chronotropic and inotropic effects, but does not alter cardiac pump function or vascular resistance, reflecting its additional β1-agonistic properties. Alternatively, during pacing it still reduces ischemia through negative inotropic effects and diminishes myocardial oxygen demand, reflecting its β1-antagonistic profile.

    Description:
Starting with a critique of the orientation of methodological training in academic psychology the essay highlights the appropriateness of method and the encouragement of cooperation as criteria for methodical professionalism. The Repertory Grid interview is introduced as a method which serves both criteria. The reviewed book (Martin FROMM) and the corresponding software (Martin FROMM & Andreas BACHER) serve as an adequate introduction to this method. Nevertheless, a research question is needed that is rational and well implemented within the field of inquiry.

    Description:
Two studies investigated how planning affects intention-behavior consistency. In Study 1 an experimental group and control group which each consisted of 14 undergraduates were requested in computerized interviews to indicate which activities they intended to perform on the following day. Subjects in the experimental group were also requested in a second phase of the interviews to specify when and where they intended to perform the activities. The results showed that activities for which time and place had been specified were more likely to be performed. In Study 2 another 75 undergraduates volunteered to participate in an experiment in which they were requested to perform an activity (reporting mood effects of reading a prose excerpt) by themselves on one of three following days. One group of subjects only agreed to perform the activity, another group agreed to perform the activity as well as indicated when and where they would do it, and a third group in addition to this indicated which other activities they would perform on the same day. In support of the hypothesis that planning an activity increases the likelihood that it will be performed, the results showed that subjects who indicated other activities more frequently performed the target activity. More efficient time management resulting from planning may account for the findings, although further research is needed to show this conclusively.

    Description:
We develop a panel model for regional house prices, for which both the cross-section and the time series dimension is large. The model allows for stochastic trends, cointegration, cross-equation correlations, and, most importantly, latent-class clustering of regions. Class membership is fully data-driven and based on the average growth rates of house prices, and the relationship of house prices with economic growth. We apply the model to quarterly data for the Netherlands. The results suggest that there is convincing evidence for the existence of two distinct clusters of regions, with pronounced differences in house price dynamics.
