Published 1997Staff ViewISSN: 1600-0714Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Forty-seven of 165 patients with AIDS (28.5%) showed exfoliative cheilitis (EC), predominantly of the lower lip (n=37). Histologically. hyphae were revealed in 23 of 47 cases 149%). In 14 of 23 specimens the histological and microbiological findings were in accordance. Smears of the vermilion border revealed Candida aibicans in half of the cases (51%); however, combinations with C. krusei. C. tropicalis and C. glabrata were also seen. Twenty of 35 patients given fluconazole either prophylactically or therapeutically showed clinical signs of oral candidiasis. Frequent moistening of the lips may result in infection of the vermilion border with Candida species: consequent desiccation of the lips will lead to scale formation and exfoliation. Smears of the vermilion border of the lower lip of 20 controls with AIDS were positive in four cases. Twenty HJV-negative controls without EC showed negative microbiological results for Candida species. Exfoliative cheilitis may be associated with Candida infection in some cases and may be considered another variant of candidiasis in AIDS patients.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Notes: Summary The penetration of ofloxacin into prostatic fluid, ejaculate and seminal fluid was measured by a high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) method after intravenous infusion (60 min) of 400 mg in six healthy male volunteers. The median concentration of ofloxacin in prostatic fluid was about one-third and that in ejaculate and seminal fluid about twice that in corresponding plasma. The results of the study indicate good penetration of ofloxacin into prostatic fluid, ejaculate and seminal fluid. Ofloxacin should thus be of value for the treatment of chronic bacterial prostatitis and vesiculitis.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-5117Keywords: primary production ; streams ; extracellular DOC ; algaeSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyNotes: Abstract Both winter photosynthesis and the release of extracellular DOC are commonly ignored in stream production studies. We examined these contributions in a second-order stream under a completely closed deciduous canopy. We estimate that in Sandy Run approximately 26% of the annual autochthonous particulate carbon is produced between December and March. Measured winter rates of photosynthesis were not significantly different than summertime rates. Contrary to implicit assumptions often made about stream primary productivity, winter production was as important as summer production. Highest rates of carbon assimilation, however, were measured in the spring and fall, and were significantly correlated with standing crops of stream algae as measured by chlorophyll concentration. The recovery of released DOC from stream algae indicated that this contribution was equivalent to 5% of the particulate contribution. Rates of DOC production were significantly correlated with rates of particulate production. We estimate that had winter photosynthesis and extracellular DOC production been ignored in Sandy Run, annual productivity would have been underestimated by about a third.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
