An analysis of the Lagrangian motion for small particles denser than surrounding fluid in a two-dimensional steady cellular flow is presented. The Stokes drag, fluid acceleration, and added mass effect are included in the particle equation of motion. Although the fluid motion is regular, the particle motion can be either chaotic or regular depending on the Stokes number and density ratio. The implications of chaotic motion to particle mixing and dispersion are discussed. Chaotic orbits lead to the dispersion of particle clouds which has many of the features of turbulent dispersion. The mixing process of particles is greatly enhanced since the chaotic advection has the property of ergodicity. However, a high dispersion rate was found to be correlated with low fractal dimension and low mixing efficiency. A similar correlation between dispersion and mixing was found for particles convected by a plane shear mixing layer.

Although the phylogenetic relationships of the major groups of fishes have been extensively studied with morphological characters, not all have been convincingly resolved. Analyses of molecular sequences from these groups may provide additional insights into problematical relationships, but are only just beginning to appear. We compare our own results from analyses of 18s ribosomal RNA sequences with those of other studies using globins, parvalbumins, insulin, 28s ribosomal RNA, and portions of two mitochondria1 genes (12S ribosomal RNA and cytochrome b). Our evaluation of these studies reveals some of the difficulties encountered in reconstructing ancient divergences within the fishes, including unequal rates of evolution (among regions of a molecule as well as among lineages), gene duplication, extinction of lineages, and a possible rapid radiation of gnathostome higher taxa. The importance of evaluating the robustness of particular phylogenetic hypotheses is stressed. Some molecules appear to be inappropriate for investigating higher level divergences within the fishes; others are more promising, but must be examined in more taxa to allow an adequate evaluation of their utility. Convincing support for particular hypotheses of relationship will ultimately require congruence of trees generated from independent molecular data sets.

[Auszug] It is tentatively suggested that this phenomenon may be due to the fact that barium sulphate has a hydrophilic surface (method of Davis and Curt is1), and that it will consequently tend to aggregate so as to present to the benzene the minimum surface per unit volume. In this respect the phenomenon ...

    Notes:
Summary Upon investigation of semen- and blood-free vaginal swabs using starch gel electrophoresis the Phosphoglucomutase type was clearly identified in about 40%. Using cellulose acetate membrane electrophoresis PGM could not be demonstrated. In all cases the results correspond with those obtained in blood. No relation was found between secretor type (determined in saliva) and PGM typing. In vaginal material the following could not be determined: Adenylatkinase (AK) using starch gel electrophoresis, Esterase D (EsD) using cellulose acetate membrane electrophoresis, and Glyoxalase I (GLO) using agarose gel thin-layer electrophoresis.

    Description / Table of Contents:
    Notes:
Summary The Gm1, Gm2, and Inv 1-factors in the vaginal secretion are in accordance with the corresponding serum features to be expected basically. Deviations are possible. They are either caused by interference factors in the vaginal secretion or other factors which are not, however, always detectable in each case. It is important to test in advance the appropriate dilutions for the particular antiserum charges and to examine extracts of the samples to find out whether they have the necessary concentration.

    Notes:
Abstract  The mammalian Dlx homeobox gene family has been shown to play multiple roles in tooth development, but a detailed comparison of the expression pattern of all members throughout tooth development has been lacking. We provide such an analysis for the six known murine Dlx genes. The expression patterns for these genes allow a refinement of previously proposed models for the role of Dlx genes in tooth type specification and raise the possibility of roles for subsets of these genes in tooth initiation, morphogenesis (enamel navel formation, enamel knot induction, cervical loop growth), and enamel formation. The relationship of Dlx gene expression to their genomic organization suggests coordinate regulation of linked genes at early stages but regulatory differences at later stages.

Abstract A laser doppler anemometer (LDA) was used to measure local dispersion coefficients of particles in turbulent flow. The experimental set-up is described along with the data acquisition equipment and processing procedures. Results for 5 μ particles dispersing from a point source in pipe flow are shown. A second estimate for the diffusivity was obtained from mean square dispersion measurements.

    Notes:
Summary The metastatic behaviour of renal cell carcinoma has been studied in a series of 687 necropsies. The observations were consistent with the concept of “metastatic inefficiency”, in that in 295 cases, including 25 with renal vein invasion, there were no detectable metastases. In the present series, renal vein involvement was not an important prognostic factor in stage 1 or 2 disease. In 73% of cases without lung metastases there were none in other sites, and in 84% of those with lung metastases there were others elsewhere, consistent with a metastatic “cascade” in which metastases first developed in the lungs and were later detected in other organs. However, the observations did not permit discrimination between anatomic cascades, in which other organs were seeded from metastasizing pulmonary metastases, and temporal cascades, in which the other were seeded at the same time as the lungs, but with fewer cancer cells. The patterns of arterial metastasis were consistent with the “seed-and-soil” hypothesis, and a novel index was developed to quantify differential organ “soils”. The contralateral kidney was not the best soil for metastases from renal carcinoma. Given the presence of lymph node metastasis, the probability of heamatogenous metastasis is 90%. However, in the absence of nodal metastasis, approximately half the cases had haematogenous metastasis.

Summary A review of the hip replacement operations performed by the department of orthopaedics of the University Hospital of Freiburg follows. The operation brought “very good” results for 14.4% of those operated upon, “good” results for 50.6% and satisfactory results for 29.7%. The results of the operation were unsatisfactory for 5.6% of the patients. In view of the possible complications, the results will be discussed.
