ISSN: 1471-0528Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: A series of patients who were suffering from dysfunctional uterine bleeding (menorrhagia) were dosed with [14C] tamoxifen prior to hysterectomy being performed. The proportion of the labelled dose which became bound to the various tissues of the uterus at different stages of the menstrual cycle was investigated. There was no apparent variation in the uptake of the compound during the menstrual cycle. However, it was found that the levels of radioactivity in the uterine tissues examined were higher than those found in the serum and that the proportion of radioactivity representing unchanged drug was two to three times that found in the serum. It appeared that tamoxifen had a definite affinity for the endometrium and that there was also some selective uptake by the corpus luteum.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1471-0528Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: A synthetic analogue of prostaglandin F2α was successfully used to induce abortion in six patients, five of whom were in the second trimester of pregnancy. Five of the patients had a complete abortion and in one the abortion was incomplete. The mean induction-abortion interval was 25 hours 15 minutes, ranging from 7 hours 45 minutes to 49 hours 30 minutes. The side-effects were similar to those reported with natural prostaglandin F2α.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The model is compared to solutions of the full Euler equations for compressible two phase flow, using numerical solutions based on the method of front tracking. The front tracking method has the distinguishing feature of being a predominantly Eulerian method in which sharp interfaces are preserved with zero numerical diffusion. Various regimes in the statistical model exhibiting qualitatively distinct behavior are explored.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1990Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7666Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The late nonlinear and chaotic stage of Rayleigh–Taylor instability is characterized by the evolution of bubbles of the light fluid and spikes of the heavy fluid, each penetrating into the other phase. This paper is focused on the numerical study of bubble interactions and their effect on the statistical behavior and evolution of the bubble envelope. Compressible fluids described by the two-fluid Euler equations are considered and the front tracking method for numerical simulation of these equations is used. Two major phenomena are studied. One is the dynamics of the bubbles in a chaotic environment and the interaction among neighboring bubbles. Another one is the acceleration of the overall bubble envelope, which is a statistical consequence of the interactions of bubbles. The main result is a consistent analysis, at least in the approximately incompressible case of these two phenomena. The consistency encompasses the analysis of experiments, numerical simulation, simple theoretical models, and variation of parameters. Numerical simulation results that are in quantitative agreement with laboratory experiment for one-and-one-half (1 (1)/(2) ) generations of bubble merger are presented. To the authors' knowledge, computations of this accuracy have not previously been obtained.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Twenty of the 56 studies showed evidence of ineffectiveness. No firm conclusions about the effectiveness of prevention interventions in the short- and medium term were possible. Over the longer term (〉3 years), the Strengthening Families Programme (SFP) showed promise as an effective prevention intervention. The Number Needed to Treat (NNT) for the SFP over 4 years for three alcohol initiation behaviours (alcohol use, alcohol use without permission and first drunkenness) was 9 (for all three behaviours). One study also highlighted the potential value of culturally focused skills training over the longer-term (NNT = 17 over 3.5 years for 4+ drinks in the last week)Conclusions (1) Research into important outcome variables needs to be undertaken; (2) the methodology of evaluations needs to be improved; (3) the SFP needs to be evaluated on a larger scale and in different settings; (4) culturally focused interventions require further development and rigorous evaluation; and (5) an international register of alcohol and drug misuse prevention interventions should be established and criteria agreed for rating prevention interventions in terms of safety, efficacy and effectiveness.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
