17Single-mode optically activated phase modulator on GaAs/GaAlAs compound semiconductor rib waveguidesChen, R. T. ; Shih, R. ; Robinson, D. ; Jannson, T.
[S.l.] : American Institute of Physics (AIP)
Published 1993Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We report on an optically activated phase modulator (OAM) and modulator array on GaAs-GaAlAs compound semiconductor rib waveguides. A rib waveguide device with an optical activation window of 5 μm in diameter was fabricated. Optical activation was produced by using a HeNe 632.8 nm wavelength as the free-carrier generator and a 1.3 μm laser as the signal carrier. A 33% modulation depth was observed and 10−2 index modulation was experimentally confirmed on an OAM working in the phase modulation regime. OAMs working in both phase- and cutoff-modulation regimes were further determined by considering the variation of the waveguide confinement factor. An 8.2 dB modulation depth was observed on an OAM working at the cutoff regime. Furthermore, the activation source for the free-carrier generation is in the mW power region, which significantly reduces the size and cost of all optical switching devices.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1989Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7690Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsChemistry and PharmacologyNotes: The quadratic hyperpolarizability tensor of 4-amino-4'-nitrodiphenyl sulfide has been sampled by measurement of the z component of its vector part, when z is the permanent dipole direction. This was also accomplished for the oxygen, selenium, and tellurium analogues. It was found that large differences in their frequency-doubling efficiency as powdered solids are not reflected in this molecular property. The sulfur, selenium and tellurium ethers have about the same hyperpolarizabilities while that of the oxygen member is somewhat lower.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1999Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7674Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The operational limits observed in spherical tokamaks, notably the small tight aspect ratio tokamak (START) device [A. Sykes et al., Nucl. Fusion 32, 694 (1992)], are consistent with those found in conventional aspect ratio tokamaks. In particular the highest β achieved (∼40%) is consistent with an ideal magneto-hydro-dynamic (MHD) Troyon type limit, the upper limit on density is well described by the Greenwald density (πa2n¯e/Ip∼1) and the normalized current (Ip/aBt) is limited such that q95(approximately-greater-than)2. Stability calculations indicate scope for increasing both normalized β and normalized current beyond the values so far achieved, although wall stabilization is generally needed for low-n modes. In double null configurations current terminating disruptions occur at each of the operational boundaries, though the current quench tends to be slow at the density limit and disruptions at high β may be due to the low q. In early limiter START discharges, before the divertor coils were installed, disruptions rarely occurred. Instead internal reconnection events which have all the characteristics of a disruption except the current quench occurred. These various disruptive behaviors are explained in terms of a model in which helicity is conserved during the disruption. Due to the low toroidal field beam ions in START, and α particles in a ST power plant, are super-Alfvénic. This gives the possibility for toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) to occur and such modes are frequently observed in START neutral beam injection (NBI) discharges, but seem to be benign. The features of these observed TAEs are shown to be in agreement with MHD calculations.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
