ISSN: 1089-7623Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsElectrical Engineering, Measurement and Control TechnologyNotes: In this article we present some basic considerations in the design of a time detector for high energy (0.2–1.0 MeV) particle detection. Based on these considerations, a novel time detector design is proposed in order to overcome some of the problems in existing designs. Improvement in the timing resolution (〈50 ps) and efficiency (〉70% for 4.0 MeV α particles) is expected and a compact detector structure with ultrahigh vacuum compatibility is achieved. The new design employs a novel form of crossed electric and magnetic fields to deflect the electrons emitted from a thin foil to form a timing signal. In this design electrons are transported in a grid-free region and the energetic particle needs to pass through the grid once only. The electric field was produced by three metal plates forming a triangular prism. The magnetic field was generated by a coil pair which creates a uniform field in the electron transport region. Computer simulation and numerical analysis were performed to calculate the electric and magnetic field as well as the electron trajectory and flight time. The detector timing resolution is analyzed and the spread in electron initial energy contributes a significant portion. To avoid the complicated numerical details in field and trajectory calculations, we use an empirical approach in this article to illustrate the design principle. Some experimental results are presented to compare with the calculations. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Although the human papillomavirus is strongly associated with certain dysplastic and malignant lesions, its exact role in tumour development remains to be determined. This review examines the role of human papilloma virus as a potential oncogenic agent in human mucosal and non-mucosal squamous cell carcinoma.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Therefore, a more detailed method was developed in the greenhouse. Small agar discs with Alternaria brassicae were placed with the infected sides against the upper side of the 2nd leaf, over a 4 mm hole. The necrotic lesions on the leaves were measured 7 days after inoculation. The test results indicate that differences in resistance do exist. It is, however, doubtful if the resistance is great enough to be used in a plant breeding programme.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1989Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: For bulk applications, high-Tc superconductors generally require high critical current density, Jc. This paper reports two methods of producing high-Tc ceramic wires. The first is an extrusion and sintering route where Jc is routinely 600–1000 A cm−2. The second is by melt texturing or directional solidification where we have achieved in excess of 7000 A cm−2 by direct measurement at 77 K in zero field. However, the ease with which wire may be extruded and sintered is attractive and functioning devices have already been manufactured using this route. Fabrication of devices is facilitated by a unique processing route that has resulted in the strongest bulk ceramic yet reported (bend strength 〉200 MPa). The melt-texturing route and the problems associated with it are examined and compared with the extrusion and sintering route. The processing and the microstructures associated with the directionally solidified YBa2Cu3Ox will be examined in detail as will the resultant superconducting properties, in particular the magnetization.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The treatment was most effective if the crop was removed from the field for drying within 48 h of topping thus avoiding severe infection of the damaged green tissues of the necks of onions.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The predicted TraT protein encoded by this gene was found to consist of 243 amino acids and to resemble the known TraT proteins of the plasmids of the F incompatibility group. Thus it contains a signal sequence of 20 amino acids, an amino-terminal lipid attachment site, and two strongly hydrophobic regions close to each other in the mature protein. A mutation leading to increased permeability of the outer membrane to hydrophobic agents, previousfy focalrzed to the traT gene, was shown to change a glycine residue to arginine within one of these hydrophobic regions. The same principle was found to apply to TraT of R6-5: the introduction, by site-directed mutagenesis, of either positively or negatively charged amino acids or the helix-disrupting proline in the corresponding hydrophobic region led to increased hydrophobic permeability of the outer membrane.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
