ISSN: 1420-9071Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyMedicineNotes: Summary The effects of 4 carbaryl doses (0.375, 0.75, 1.50 and 3 mg/100 g) on the reticuloendothelial system (RES) phagocytic activity were studied 1 h after their administration to male rats. Carbaryl reduced RES phagocytic activity. Results showed a dose-dependent drop in RES phagocytic activity. Carbaryl might act as an inhibitor of phagocytes by saturing them to greater or lesser degree, depending on the dose administered.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-0703Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Energy, Environment Protection, Nuclear Power EngineeringMedicineNotes: Abstract Morestan (6-methyl-2,3-quinoxalinedithiol cyclic-S,S carbonate) and two of its metabolites: methyl-2,3-quinoxalinedithiol and 6-methyl-2,3-quinoxalinedihydroxy were administered to male and female rats by intraperitoneal route for 4 consecutive days (50 mg/ kg/daily). Morestan was also administered by esophageal intubation for 4 days at the dose of 75 mg/kg/daily. After evaluating the pentobarbital sleeping time in the animals on the 5th day, aminopyrineN-demethylase,p-nitroanisoleO-demethylase and aromatic aniline hydroxylase activities and levels of cytochrome P450, proteins and RNA were measured in the microsomal hepatic fraction. Protein and nucleic acid levels were also measured in whole liver. The 3 substances studied caused considerable decreases in activity of certain microsomal enzymes: morestan inhibits some hepatic mixed-function oxidase systems; in females it is more active by peroral administration, and in males by intraperitoneal route. However, 6-methyl-2,3-quinoxalinedithiol is an even more powerful inhibitor of monooxygenase activities both in males and females. 6-methyl-2,3-quinoxalinedihydroxy also decreases activity by microsomal enzymes, but its action is inferior to that of the other two products investigated.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1987Staff ViewISSN: 0021-9541Keywords: Life and Medical Sciences ; Cell & Developmental BiologySource: Wiley InterScience Backfile Collection 1832-2000Topics: BiologyMedicineNotes: The characterization and purification of the growth-promoting activity present in rat submaxillary gland extracts, known to be required for the proliferation of adipose precursor cells in serum-free medium, have been undertaken. Fractionation of the extracts by ion-exchange chromatography, gel filtration, and affinity chromatography on immobilized benzamidine allowed the copurification of the mitogenic activity with two distinct arginylesteropeptidases of apparent molecular weight 25,000; one of these enzymes has been purified to homogeneity and shown to be immunologically related to tonin, a well-characterized kallikreinlike protease from submaxillary gland. The specificity of both enzymes was similar to that of plasma and glandular kallikreins, as indicated by the relative rates of hydrolysis of peptide p-nitroanilide substrates. Prior treatment of the kallikreinlike proteases with phenylmethylsulfonylfluoride or aprotinin abolished completely both mitogenic and arginylesteropeptidase activities, indicating that enzymatic activity was essential for the manifestation of their growth-promoting ability. The kallikreinlike proteases from rat submaxillary gland were able to replace thrombin to support the proliferation of Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts in serum-free medium. These results underline the role of proteases in controlling cell growth and are discussed in light of adipose tissue development.Additional Material: 6 Ill.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
