We have isolated two mutant alleles of SPK1 (spk1K227A and spk1-1A208P) that are defective for checkpoint-arrest functions but retain wild-type levels of SPK1-associated growth activity. Both mutations occur within conserved regions of the kinase domain of SPK1 resulting in a substantial reduction in the catalytic activity of Spk1. Thus, while minimal levels of Spk1 kinase activity are capable of supporting normal rates of growth, higher levels are required for checkpoint functions. In addition, using deletional analysis we have identified a region within the N-terminus of Spk1 outside of the conserved kinase domain that is required for checkpoint functions. The pairing is mediated in our model by exchange of phonons and higher frequency “excitons” which, by themselves, would yield aT c of about 200 K. The additional exchange of an antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation (antiparamagnon) is adjusted to reduceT c to the observed 90 K range. We calculate the RPA spin fluctuation propagator self-consistently including the “feedback” effect of the superconductivity and assuming that only wave vectors near “nesting” are important. The addition of the antiparamagnon exchange further enhancesR, which depends strongly on the band-filling. We employ two RPA models: the first, consisting of a direct Coulomb interaction in addition to U, leads to softer phonons and an enhanced attractive s-wave phonon-induced electron-electron interaction while the second, a pure Hubbard model, yields the opposite effect. The weak-coupling selfconsistency equation for the order parameter in the 2D first Brillouin zone is solved for a tight-binding band. This leads to a simple commutator relation for the total angular momentum of the system and thep-wave pair amplitude. The longitudinal NMR frequencies for both the Balian-Werthamer (BW) and Anderson-Brinkman-Morel (ABM) states are calculated rigorously within the self-consistent random phase approximation scheme, taking account of all the degrees of freedom of the complex fluctuations of the order parameter (18 components) and their couplings via the dipole interactions. The results for the low-frequency resonances (ω≪Δ) are in agreement with those of Leggett except in the vicinity ofT c. In addition, in the presence of the dipole interaction, we find longitudinal resonances at ω=(8/5)1/2Δ and ω=21/2Δ for the BW and ABM states, respectively.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
