ISSN: 1089-7690Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsChemistry and PharmacologyNotes: A method is presented for numerical integration of the generalized Langevin equation (GLE) based on modeling of the "random force'' as a discrete autoregressive process. This modeling procedure, drawn from digital signal processing and spectral estimation methods which have been used extensively in electrical engineering applications, provides for efficient evaluation of the friction integral in the GLE as well as for generation of a random force process with the desired spectrum. The method is shown, through comparison with molecular dynamics results, to be effective in simulating the force autocorrelation function of an iodine atom dissolved in Lennard-Jones (LJ) xenon. In a companion paper this method is applied in a simulation of the vibrational relaxation of I2 in LJ xenon at two very different densities and found to perform well.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1089-7690Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsChemistry and PharmacologyNotes: A simple classical stochastic model for diatomic vibrational relaxation, based on the generalized Langevin equation, is presented. The memory function in the generalized Langevin equation is determined directly from equilibrium force autocorrelation functions for the individual atoms of the diatomic dissolved in the solvent of interest. A simple autoregressive (AR) procedure, developed in a preceding paper [D. E. Smith and C. B. Harris, J. Chem. Phys. 92, xxx (1990)], is used for modeling the memory functions to arbitrary order. This model is tested on the system of iodine in Lennard–Jones xenon using fourth order AR approximations for the memory functions, and is found to be very effective in reproducing data from molecular dynamics simulations at two very different densities. Results are discussed in terms of the simplifying assumption that the solvent interaction with the diatomic can be characterized by equilibrium dynamics of single atoms in solution.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1996Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7623Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsElectrical Engineering, Measurement and Control TechnologyNotes: A new gated x-ray framing camera has been developed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for use at the Nova laser facility. This diagnostic, the flexible x-ray imager, has been designed as a modular unit that can be rapidly reconfigured to change the spectral response, magnification, sensitivity, and spatial and temporal resolutions of the instrument. The electrical gate pulse width may be varied from 200 ps to 2 ns depending upon whether the experimental emphasis is on temporal resolution or sensitivity. The long integration times are particularly useful in experiments where motional blurring occurs over even longer time scales. A detailed description of the instrument and its varied uses is presented. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

It is also being used clinically to delineate malignant gliomas. The blood-CSF barrier may be an important interface for 5-ALA transport between blood and brain as in vivo studies have indicated 5-ALA is taken up by the choroid plexuses whereas the normal blood-brain barrier appears to be relatively impermeable. This study examines the mechanisms of 5-[3H]ALA uptake into isolated rat lateral ventricle choroid plexuses. Results suggest that there are two uptake mechanisms. The first was a Na+-independent uptake system that was pH dependent (being stimulated at low pH). Uptake was inhibited by the dipeptide Gly-Gly and by cefadroxil, an α-amino-containing cephalosporin. These properties are the same as the proton-dependent peptide transporters PEPT1 and PEPT2, which have recently been shown to transport 5-ALA in frog oocyte expression experiments. Choroid plexus uptake was not inhibited by captopril, a PEPT1 inhibitor, suggesting PEPT2-mediated uptake. The presence of PEPT2 and absence of PEPT1 in the choroid plexus were confirmed by western blotting. The second potential mechanism was both Na+ and HCO3- dependent and appears to be an organic anion transporter, although it is possible that removal of Na+ and HCO3- may indirectly affect PEPT2 by affecting intracellular pH. The presence of PEPT2 and a putative Na+/HCO3--dependent organic anion transporter is important not only for an understanding of 5-ALA movement between blood and brain but also because these transporters may affect the distribution of a number of drugs between blood and CSF.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1747-6593Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Energy, Environment Protection, Nuclear Power EngineeringNotes: The application of physicochemical treatment (PCT) to an overloaded sewage-treatment works is described. Two methods were evaluated: (i) the ‘Clariflow’system marketed by Energy and Waste Systems Ltd, and (ii) an ‘in-house’system of dosing chemicals into existing tanks. Both methods increased the efficiency of primary sedimentation, thereby reducing the organic load applied to biological filters and improving final effluent quality. Some indication of the cost-benefit relationships was obtained.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
