ISSN: 1744-6570Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: PsychologyNotes: Studies of organizational power using questionnaire measures of perceived control have usually asked respondents, “How much influence do (various groups in the hierarchy) have on what goes on in your organization?” The present study measured such general control, plus control over specific task-relevant responsibilities. Data were obtained from 526 individuals at four hierarchical levels in 20 regional offices of an insurance company. Predicted relationships between total general control and task-relevant control and an independent measure of effectiveness were only partially supported. The general manager's control was more important than expected. However, measuring task-relevant control could be a useful management tool, and could help future research explicate relationships between control and effectiveness.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Samples were analysed for available lysine, thiamine and riboflavin before salting, after salting, after drying and after 1 month's storage at 20°C. Final losses of each of these nutrients were lowest when the fish were pickle cured. Losses were also lower when fresher raw material was used. the use of good quality fish and a pickle salting method is therefore recommended for this type of product.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1744-6570Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: PsychologyNotes: The effects of decision makers' race and gender on promotion decisions about applicants of diverse race and gender for 51 top management positions in a cabinet-level U.S. federal department over a 12-year period were examined. Promotion decisions were made in a 2-stage process. First, a review panel decided which applicants to refer for the position. Second, the selecting official selected one of the referred applicants for the position. Overall, decisions by review panels of different race and gender composition and by selecting officials of different race and gender were to the advantage of female applicants and to the disadvantage of African American and Hispanic male applicants. These effects were not fully accounted for by race or gender differences in applicant qualifications, or by any of several theoretical explanations for the effects of race and gender on promotions to top management.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Muscle fat content and total depot fat (peritoneal and perivisceral fat) indicated a seasonal variation with minimum values observed in late spring and maximum in late summer. Gonadosomatic indices of cultured fish were lower than those found in wild specimens. Lipid content of cultured sea bream was much higher than that of wild fish. Differences were also observed in fatty acid profiles. Cultured fish were characterized by higher levels of monoenes, n-9 and 18:2n-6 fatty acids and wild fish by higher levels of saturates, 20:4n-6, n-3 fatty acids and n-3/n-6 ratios. Differences were also noted in the external appearance of fish.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2648Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Three variables were experimentally manipulated by simulation measurement using six vignettes in a completely randomized, partial hierarchical, experimental design medical diagnosis (AIDS v non-AIDS), sexual orientation (heterosexual v homosexual) and intravenous drug-use history (IVDU v non-IVDU) Following each vignette, the same Prejudicial Evaluation Scale (PES) and Social Interaction Scale (SIS) were used to measure nurses’ attitudes toward patients and their willingness to interact with patients Vignette questionnaires were randomly assigned to 360 acute-care nurses Although sexual orientation was found not to influence PES and SIS scores, an AIDS medical diagnosis and a history of intravenous drug use were found to increase nurses’ negative attitudes toward patients significantly and reduce their willingness to interact with patients Study findings did not vary according to nurses’ age, academic preparation or previous practice experience with patients with AIDSType of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1999Staff ViewISSN: 1433-8726Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract Several laparoscopic approaches to the adrenal gland have been described. The lateral transperitoneal approach has several distinct advantages when contrasted with other techniques for laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LA). We present our technique and results obtained in 50 consecutive transperitoneal LAs. We review 50 consecutive laparoscopic adrenalectomies (28 female, 19 male) performed from 1993 to 1998. S.J. Shichman or R.E. Sosa was either the primary surgeon or the first assistant for all cases. The lateral transperitoneal approach described below was used in all cases. Indications for adrenalectomy included Cushing's syndrome (13), aldosteronoma (15), pheochromocytoma (7), nonfunctioning adenoma (11), hyperplasia (2), and 1 case each of Carney's syndrome and metastasis to the adrenal gland. We performed 5 bilateral, 22 left, and 18 right laparoscopic adrenalectomies. The average time needed for bilateral adrenalectomy was 503 min (range 298–690 min); for left adrenalectomy, 227 min (range 121–337 min); and for right LA, 210 min (range 135–355 min). We demonstrated a yearly trend in lower operative times. The largest adrenal gland removed measured 13.8 × 6.7 × 3.5 cm. Intraoperative blood loss was low. Only one patient received a blood transfusion. Conversion to open adrenalectomy was not required. Postoperative analgesic requirements were low. The average length of stay was 3.8 days for bilateral LA and 3 days for unilateral LA. Complications occurred in 5 patients (2 wound infections, 2 hematomas, and 1 pleural effusion). There was no mortality. Lateral transperitoneal adrenalectomy is a safe and efficient technique for the removal of functional and nonfunctional adrenal masses. This technique is associated with low morbidity, a minimal postoperative analgesic requirement, and a short hospital stay and, in our opinion, is more versatile than the retroperitoneal approach.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1572-901XSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Chemistry and PharmacologyNotes: Summary Iron-molybdenum heterometallic complexes, FeMoO2R4-(H2O) (R=8-quinolinolate, diethyldithiocarbamate, 4-morpholinyl-dithiocarbamate and piperidinyldithiocarbamate), have been prepared from iron(III) molybdate. T.l.c. and x-ray diffraction studies indicate that the complexes are discrete species. The complexes are non-electrolytes in dimethylformamide. Magnetic measurements suggest that the iron and molybdenum are in the III and V oxidation states, respectively, with octahedral geometry around each atom. I.r. spectral studies indicate the presence of MoO3+ and FeOMo bridges and the monoionic bidentate nature of the ligands. Electronic spectral and thermal decomposition studies on these complexes are reported.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-2762Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: SociologyNotes: Abstract Little research has been conducted on ineffective behavior or “bad” characteristics of managers as contrasted with effective behavior or “good” characteristics. This study examines the perceived characteristics of bad managers as well as good managers. In contrast to a stereotypical view of the good manager as masculine, bad managers were seen by business students as low in both masculinity and femininity, or in nonstereotypical terms. Results were not affected by the relative social desirability of masculine and feminine characteristics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
