Published 1985Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7690Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsChemistry and PharmacologyNotes: The paramagnetic resonance powder spectrum of an electron or nuclear spin system involving an isotropic Zeeman and an axially symmetric, first-order fine-structure splitting has been numerically investigated for the purpose of finding a simple, direct, and accurate method for determining its single-crystal parameters in polycrystalline-amorphous samples. It is shown that from the positions and relative intensities of some selected first- and second-derivative peaks of the axial fine-structure powder spectrum, one can directly determine with high accuracy the associated coupling constant, single-crystal line shape, and single-crystal linewidth for the external magnetic field perpendicular as well as parallel to the axially symmetric axis. The results of an experimental application of this method to the case of a randomly oriented zinc chelate biradical system are presented. The new powder spectrum method is applicable to first-order axially symmetric ESR and NMR quadrupole and dipole-dipole pair centers with isotropic g values under rigid state or slow tumbling orientational motion in polycrystalline-amorphous substances.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The carer group showed a significant decrease in recreation and pastimes and social interactions compared to older GP attenders. The carers showed similar restrictions in social interactions and recreation to those with chronic arthritis, but the latter were more impaired in the domains of emotional behaviour and sleep and rest. The older people attending a pain clinic did not differ in the areas of alertness and social interactions compared to the carer group. The dialysis group demonstrated the greatest dysfunction overall. These results suggest that the psychosocial health of carers of those with dementia is impaired, the profile of which differs from those suffering with chronic diseases. Social and recreation activities appear most affected in the carers. Commensurate with studies exploring the health status of those suffering from diseases, the measurement of the psychosocial health status of carers should also be considered in the scope of assessment and intervention.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

We have determined the free-volume “hole” sizes in these polymers by comparing the observed ortho-positronium lifetimes with the known lifetime-free volume correlation for low-molecular-weight systems. The free volumes for four epoxies with different crosslink densities are found to vary significantly over the temperature range between -78° and 250°C. The free-volume holes for these polymers are found to range from 0.025 to 0.220 nm3. Two important transition temperatures were found: one corresponds to the glass transition temperature Tg determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the other occurs about 80-130°C below Tg. The sub-Tg transition temperature is interpreted tentatively as being where hole size reaches dimensions adequate for positronium trapping or else the onset temperature for local mode or side-chain motions. These two transition temperatures plus two additional onset temperatures are found to be correlated with crosslink densities calculated from stoichiometry.Additional Material: 8 Ill.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
