Abstract Textural isotopic and microfossil data from two gravity cores obtained in Saguenay Fjord, Quebec, suggest that a distinctive sandy clay bed was deposited as the result of a major landslide in the Saguenay River basin. Pb-210 dating of the cores indicate that the bed is of similar age to the magnitude 7 earthquake of February 5, 1663. The slide involved sensitive marine clays and may have occurred in two stages. Slide sediments carried into the Saguenay River channel were probably reworked and subsequently transported down the Fjord basin as two distinct cohesionless mass flows. Fine clay laminae that overlie the older mass flow bed record the modulation of depositional processes by tidal currents for several weeks after this event.

    Notes:
Abstract The distribution of foraminifers, molluscs and ostracods was investigated in a moderately polluted part of the Canso Strait. These three groups of invertebrates show a relatively high, moderate and low tolerance to industrial effluents respectively. Maps of species distributions and of trace metal concentrations indicate that the usual direction of movement of contaminated surface waters is southward. In the marine environment adjacent to the industrialized shoreline the productivity of the Foraminifera is relatively low compared to values observed in the less polluted areas of the Strait. The relatively large numbers of Eggerella advena reflect its ability to compete successfully and to reproduce in modified or ‘artificial’ environments. Stressed environments near pollution sources in the Strait are characterized by large numbers of E. advena, Elphidium incertum/clavatum group, the mollusc species Modiolus modiolus, and several ostracods including Baffinicythere emarginata and Muellerina canadensis.

    Notes:
Abstract Benthonic foraminifera samples were collected seasonally near several isolated sources of sewage and (or) industrial effluent in the Restigouche estuary. Distinct biotopes based on species diversity and population density are developed locally especially near Dalhousie peninsula and Belledune Point in response to the effects of effluent discharge. Averaged diversity indices calculated in known polluted describe an initially depressed curve that reflects the development of near-abiotic conditions close to the effluent source and, at some distance offshore, an anomalously high diversity which may be indicative of a zone near each outfall in which certain components of the effluent generate a temporary favorable artificial environment. TheElphidium incertumlclavatum group usually dominates the living fauna near sewage outfalls and appears to be able to invade and maintain itself on nearshore sediment substrates which have pH values in excess of 6.4.
