ISSN: 1437-3262Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: GeosciencesDescription / Table of Contents: Abstract In a long »corridor« in the internal zone of the Betic Cordilleras, bounded to the north by the Sierra Nevada and to the south by the Sierras Lujar, Contraviesa and Gador, two discernible bands of strike-slip faults exist: These bands lie in an approximately E-W direction and are well exposed throughout and beyond the 85 km long belt. The characteristic features of strike-slip faults, such as cataclastic rocks composed of variously textured fault breccia, which also include fragments of rocks up to several metres in size, incipient foliation, and striation demonstrate the right-lateral nature of the displacement. There are also fractures which run in a NW-SE and NNE-SSW direction, and apparently originated after formation of the E-W faults. The magnitude of lateral displacements is difficult to calculate. Evidence of considerable vertical movement can be found locally. These strike-slip displacements have essentially occurred since the middle Miocene period and might still be taking place. Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-0495Keywords: Key words Fracturation ; Alpujarride marbles ; Karstification ; Carbonate aquiferSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: GeosciencesNotes: Abstract The analysis of the fractures in the marble forming sierras Blanca and Mijas (southern Spain), with faults of markedly different sizes and joints measured at 21 stations, demonstrate the presence of two principal directions of fractures (NNW-SSE and NNE-SSW). Other major directions of fractures, although less distinct, are N100E, N120E and N60E. The form of the karstic cavities known in these sierras was influenced by fractures, fundamentally NNW-SSE and, to a lesser extent, NNE-SSW, as well as by the mineralogical composition of the marble. All the cavities known are located in blue limestone marble and appear to have formed by the end of the Miocene, principally during the Pliocene and the Pleistocene. From a hydrogeological standpoint, Sierra Blanca and Sierra Mijas constitute a unit limited by faults oriented ENE-WSW, NNW-SSE and NNE-SSW. Specifically, fractures of the latter two directions influence the compartmentalization and the hydrogeological functioning of the unit. According to the degree of fracturing and/or karstification, three basic types (apart from intermediate situations) of aquiferous behavior have been distinguished: karstic aquifer, fissured aquifer, and porous aquifer.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-1157Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: GeosciencesNotes: Abstract The Neogene is the period in which the Betic Cordillera, the Rif, and the Alboran Sea acquired their present configuration. The Neogene sediments of the Betic Internal Zones (located directly to the North of the Alboran Sea) show the effects of important periods of deformation. Deposition was clearly controlled by tectonics. Therefore the generation, evolution, and total or partial destruction of basins and the formation of new, often superimposed, basins are common phenomena, according to the locations of the basins in the Betic Cordillera and to the different geodynamic situations.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

To differentiate between scleroderma ‘en coup de sabre’ (SCS) and progressive facial hemiatrophy (PFH), colour slides of 13 patients diagnosed as SCS and nine as PFH were examined by two dermatologists and microscopic slides by two pathologists. In both cases, the slides were randomly presented and no clinical information was given. The clinical and histopathological findings were statistically compared with two-tailed tests and α = 0.05. κ coefficients were obtained to evaluate the concordance between dermatologists, pathologists, and in terms of the consensus diagnosis. The usefulness of photographic assessment is limited by the inability to palpate the consistency of lesions. The most important clinical feature that differentiated both conditions was cutaneous sclerosis present in eight of 13 patients with SCS and in none of the PFH patients (P 〈 0.005). Other clinical features more frequently found in SCS were cutaneous hyperpigmentation and alopecia. The more frequent clinical features in PFH were total hemifacial involvement and ocular changes. Statistically significant histopathological features were: connective tissue fibrosis present in all cases with SCS and two of nine patients with PFH (P 〈 0.0002); adnexal atrophy present in 11 of 13 patients with SCS, and in three of nine with PFH (P 〈 0.02), and mononuclear cell infiltrates in all patients with SCS cf. six with PFH (P 〈 0.05). Our results suggest that in most cases it is possible to differentiate SCS from PFH based on clinicopathological findings.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Strawberry packages with perforations, and treated by simulating transport and shelf-life conditions, developed an internal atmosphere with composition close to that recommended for this fruit. This controlled decay and reduced deterioration, thus extending strawberry postharvest life. Moreover, fruit ripeness degree and nutritional value were better preserved, although this modified atmosphere packaging seemed to reduce fruit color and lead to off-flavor development.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1985Staff ViewISSN: 1398-9995Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: In order to compare long-term changes induced on a wide spectrum of bronchial hyperreactivity (BH) by the antiallergic drugs disodium cromyglycate (DSCG) and ketotifen, 56 asthmatic patients (age range 15–55 years) were studied. Patients were allocated to three groups with similar age and BH level. During 2 months, 15 individuals inhaled 20 mg DSCG four times a day, 14 took ketotifen 1 mg twice a day orally and 14 one placebo (lactose) capsule twice a day. After preliminary results, an additional group of 13 patients took clemastine 1 mg orally twice a day for 1 week. Only the ketotifen and clemastine groups differed significantly from the placebo group on shifting log doseresponse curves of inhaled histamine. In addition, no significant difference was seen between the ketotifen and clemastine groups. These results suggest that changes induced by ketotifen were mainly related to its powerful antihistamine action; similarly, nonspecific BH is not wholly dependent on mediator release.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

In melanoma desmoplasia is associated with a better survival. Four paediatric patients with hard, ligneous, progressively hypopigmented and alopecic GCMN were seen among 143 cases of GCMN at the Department of Dermatology of the National Institute of Paediatrics, Mexico City. Clinically, induration was progressive in three patients and regressive in one. Pigmentation was regressive in all. Histopathologically, all four patients showed intense dermal fibrosis, scarce naevus cells, and hypotrophic or absent hair follicles. Follow-up and serial biopsies in three patients documented the progressive nature of fibrosis and naevus cell depletion. No evidence of malignant transformation was found. Naevus cell depletion resulted in pigment loss and may have reduced the risk of malignant transformation. Although the cause of fibrosis is unknown, the possibility of an immune reaction to naevus cells is postulated.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
