The present atmosphere by contrast is highly oxidizing (20% O2). The source of this oxygen is generally agreed to have been oxygenic photosynthesis, whereby organisms use water as the electron donor in the production of organic matter, liberating oxygen into the atmosphere. A major question in the evolution of life is how oxygenic photosynthesis could have evolved under anoxic conditions — and also when this capability evolved. It seems unlikely that water would be employed as the electron donor in anoxic environments that were rich in reducing agents such as ferrous or sulfide ions which could play that role. The abiotic production of atmospheric oxidants could have provided a mechanism by which locally oxidizing conditions were sustained within spatially confined habitats thus removing the available reductants and forcing photosynthetic organisms to utilize water as the electron donor. We suggest that atmospheric H2O2 played the key role in inducing oxygenic photosynthesis because as peroxide increased in a local environment, organisms would not only be faced with a loss of reductant, but they would also be pressed to develop the biochemical apparatus (e.g., catalase) that would ultimately be needed to protect against the products of oxygenic photosynthesis. This scenario allows for the early evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis while global conditions were still anaerobic.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

We report for the first time, two children with systemic lupus erythematosus who developed acute angioedema after the long-term use of enalapril. Prompt recognition and appropriate management of ACE-induced angioedema prevented life-threatening complications. This report highlights the potential risks of angioedema associated with the use of ACE inhibitors in children. Patients should be advised to seek medical treatment immediately if they experience swelling of the face, neck, or tongue, and especially if they have trouble breathing, speaking, or swallowing.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

These compounds coalesced in the upper atmosphere with particles ejected from craters formed by impacts of large objects. Coalescence during exposure to UV radiation concentrated organic monomers and enhanced formation of oligomers. Continuing coalescence added material to the growing particles and shielded prebiotic compounds from prolonged UV radiation. These particles settled into the lower atmosphere where they were scavenged by rain. Aqueous chemistry and evaporation of raindrops containing nomomers in high temperature regions near the Earth's surface also promoted continued formation of oligomers. Finally, these oligomers were deposited in the oceans where continued prebiotic evolution led to the most primitive cell. Results of our studies suggest that prebiotic chemical evolution may be an inevitable consequence of impacting comets during the late accretion of planets anywhere in the universe if oceans remained on those planetary surfaces.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Defects of orthodox difference formulae are identified. In particular: (a) reversed waves and stability problems arise from central differences and (b) first order errors and a ‘pseudo-viscous’ dispersion effect with accompanying false attenuation results from upwind differences. These difficulties are particularly serious in view of the coarse differencing required for practical analogue computation. A much superior formula is presented which is entirely free of attenuation and is easily implemented.
