ISSN: 1365-3091Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: GeosciencesNotes: Previous work on the mineralogy of the volcanic supra-Wyrley Yard tonstein is extended to include the opaque minerals. This has led to a better understanding of the major and trace element geochemistry of the tonstein. The complete mineral assemblage is kaolinite (dominant) with minor quartz, K-mica, zircon, apatite, pyrite, sphalerite, galena, rutile, dolomite, barytes, goethite and organic matter.Information on element location in the tonstein has been obtained by using autoradiography and fission track radiography, the electron probe and by analysing separated fractions with an optical spectrograph. This has enabled the diagenetic history of individual elements to be determined, and the composition of the tonstein to be compared with igneous material. The high concentration of Th, U, Pb, Sn, Bi, Y, Be and B in the tonstein, and the low concentration of Ti, Cr, V, Ni, Cu and Co is indicative of an acidic ash. A source in the Armorican orogenic belt is postulated, based on the contrast with the basaltic Carboniferous volcanism and also the high concentrations of Sn, Pb and Zn.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1990Staff ViewISSN: 1432-8798Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary Vaccinia virus recombinants were constructed which contained cDNA sequences encoding the structural region of dengue 2 virus (PR159/S1 strain) or yellow fever virus (17D strain). The flavivirus cDNA sequences were expressed under the control of the vaccinia 7.5k early/late promotor. Cultured cells infected with these recombinants expressed immunologically reactive flavivirus structural proteins, precursor prM and E. These proteins appeared to be cleaved and glycosylated properly since they comigrated with the authentic proteins from dengue 2 virus- and yellow fever virus-infected cells. Mice immunized with the dengue/vaccinia recombinant showed a dengue-specific immune response that included low levels of neutralizing antibodies. Immunization of mice with the yellow fever/vaccinia recombinant was less effective at inducing an immune response to yellow fever virus and in only some of the mice were low titers of neutralizing antibodies produced.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-8798Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary. Viral infections of the central nervous system (CNS) following peripheral inoculation of Sindbis viruses were studied. The use of viral strains, which vary in their neuroinvasive and neurovirulent properties, and various strains of mice, which differ in immunocompetence, revealed several pathways of viral neuroinvasion in adult mice. A genetic-trait dependent mechanism was exhibited by the neuroinvasive viruses, showing a similar pattern in all mice strains tested. A second mechanism, dependent on a prolonged high viral load, was exhibited by a noninvasive variant in Severe Combined ImmunoDeficient (SCID) mice. The absence of antiviral antibodies in SCID mice allowed the maintenance of a long-term high viremia, leading to a random entry to the CNS and proliferation in brain tissue. An additional pathway for neuroinvasion was induced upon disruption of the blood-brain barrier activity by exogenous reagents and was demonstrated in cases of short lived high viremia of noninvasive viruses.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-1866Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: GeosciencesNotes: Abstract The Rosita Hills volcanic centre is an alkalicalcic, mid-Tertiary complex overlying orthoand paragneissic basement, on the eastern margin of the Rio Grande Rift in south central Colorado, USA. The centre contains vein-hosted, adularia-sericite type, epithermal Ag and base-metal mineralisation with minor Au. Stable isotope studies (O and H) of whole rock and mineral separate (quartz and sericite) samples from veins and hydrothermal eruption breccias show that the hydrothermal fluid had both magmatic and meteoric components. The δD and δ18O values of the hydrothermal fluid, calculated from mineral values, range from -22‰ to -103‰ and 0.5‰ to 5.9‰ respectively. Fluid inclusion data from vein minerals (quartz, baryte and sphalerite) and from an advanced argillic lithocap overlying the veins again show that the hydrothermal system had more than one component fluid. Fluid inclusions have salinities which range from 1.7 to 25.1 wt% NaCl equivalent and show evidence of boiling in the advanced argillic lithocap. Homogenisation temperatures range from 135°C to 298°C. Liquid CO2 is present in some inclusions. These data indicate that a saline, isotopically heavy fluid mixed with a dilute, isotopically light fluid to precipitate the ore. We argue that the saline, isotopically heavy fluid is magmatic and derived from a resurgent rhyolitic magma below the mineralisation.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
