ISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: According to the Bergman–Milton theory [D. J. Bergman, Phys. Rep. 43, (No. 9), 377 (1978), and G. W. Milton, J. Appl. Phys. 52, 5286 (1981)], the effective dielectric constant or conductivity of a two-component mixture is a function of the ratio of the dielectric constants (or conductivities) of those components. The function has simple poles only at some negative values of the ratio, and positions of the poles and residues are dependent only on the microgeometry of the mixture. In this study, the location of the poles and the values of the residues are found for two-component, two-dimensional composite materials with periodic, simple-square lattice structures using the Fourier series expansion technique. With the locations of the poles and residues determined, the effective dielectric constants or conductivities of two-component composite materials may be expressed in practical forms and may be predicted for composite mixtures even when the dielectric constants of the component materials are complex.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1999Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7623Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsElectrical Engineering, Measurement and Control TechnologyNotes: An eight channel electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) diagnostic system is being developed for use on the helically symmetric experiment (HSX) stellarator. The system utilizes a linear Schottky diode mixer/receiver array, coupled with low cost conventional ECE radiometer IF boards under development at U.C. Davis, to measure the second harmonic x-mode radiation from the plasma. The array is fed with a fixed local oscillator, with single sideband operation enabled via a dichroic plate high pass filter whose cutoff frequency equals that of the local oscillator. A multithrow, high speed (〈100 ns switching times) microwave switch is utilized to sequentially connect the output from each mixer channel to the broadband IF receiver system, thus making the array capable of generating a high resolution two-dimensional image of the HSX electron temperature profile at rates exceeding 50 kHz. Instrument details of the system will be described. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

A new measurement system to monitor the resistivities of soil and sand samples while samples are being contaminated by diesel oil is presented. The frequency used in measurements is 100 kHz. Since the measurement system is composed of coil-type transmitters and receivers, there is no need for electrodes to be in contact with samples. The contamination process is simulated using diesel oil dripping on top of soil and sand samples. The conductivity distributions in samples along the sample length are recorded as a function of time. Water-wet sand and soil samples were measured during diesel oil contamination. The measured data show that the conductivities of soil and sand samples change during the contamination process. The change in resistivity for measured samples before and after diesel oil contamination is in the range of 20% to 50%, giving a reflection coefficient change in the low-frequency limit of 4.7% to 7%. This amount of change in the reflection coefficient makes it very challenging to detect and monitor oil contamination based on EM reflection from the contaminants. The results suggest that EM methods based on propagation and induction, such as tomography and borehole induction, could be used for this purpose.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
