Abstract. Photoconductivity and photorefractive two-wave-mixing in a diffusion regime have been analyzed in a germanium-doped Cd0.99Zn0.01Te crystal at λ=1.064 μm. Temporal responses present a transient enhancement depending on total illumination and temperature. This enhancement depends also on the initial illumination present on the crystal. Steady-state photorefractive gain is rather high and presents an intensity–temperature resonance phenomenon. In addition, preliminary measurements have been performed at λ=1.55 μm. More classical behavior has been observed and a relatively lower photorefractive gain has been measured. We interpret these differences in terms of multiple captures induced by at least two deep traps and a shallow trap located within the band gap of the material. Experimental results show this material to have very promising prospects for further photorefractive developments.

Abstract. Congenital abnormalities of the bronchi have been classically described with chest X-rays, conventional tomography, bronchography, CT and MR imaging. Recently, the capacity of spiral CT to explore a complete volume with no gap and excellent multiplanar reformations has been emphasized. The contribution of this technique to the analysis of congenital anomalies of tracheobronchial branching patterns encountered in adult patients is illustrated. Agenesis, aplasia, and hypoplasia are discussed, followed by bronchial atresia and abnormalities of bronchial divisions. In most cases spiral CT permits a full and correct evaluation of the malformation as well as its associated anomalies. It appears therefore to be the preferable technique for studying such anomalies of the tracheobronchial tree. Moreover, knowledge of CT aspects of the main congenital bronchial abnormalities along with complete visualization of the tracheobronchial tree will probably lead to detection of more incidental anomalies.

Abstract. A small number of cases of cigarette-smoking-associated respiratory bronchiolitis (RB) with positive findings on the chest radiograph have been reported in the literature. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) findings are available in even fewer cases. We describe the case of an asymptomatic female smoker presenting with a reticulomicronodular infiltrate on a routine chest radiograph. High-resolution CT was characterized by ground-glass opacities and centrilobular micronodules with an upper lobe predominance. Surgical biopsy revealed peribronchiolar lesions, with accumulation of brown pigmented macrophages in the lumen of alveolar and bronchiolar lumen, consistent with the pathologic diagnosis of RB.

Abstract  Microsatellite markers are increasingly being used in crop plants to discriminate among genotypes and as tools in marker-assisted selection. Here we evaluated the use of microsatellite markers to quantify the genetic diversity within as well as among accessions sampled from the world germplasm collection of sorghum. Considerable variation was found at the five microsatellite loci analysed, with an average number of alleles per locus equal to 2.4 within accessions and 19.2 in the overall sample of 25 accessions. The collection of sorghum appeared highly structured genetically with about 70% of the total genetic diversity occurring among accessions. However, differentiation among morphologically defined races of sorghum, or among geographic origins, accounted for less than 15% of the total genetic diversity. Our results are in global agreement with those obtained previously with allozyme markers. We were also able to show that microsatellite data are useful in identifying individual accessions with a high relative contribution to the overall allelic diversity of the collection.

Abstract Dynamic mechanical and thermal analysis (DMTA) has been used to study the effects of surface treatment of carbon fibres on the viscoelastic properties of composites containing them. The fibres were treated by dip-coating, electro-polymerization, and plasma polymerization, and the behaviour of these fibres is compared with that of fibres treated by ordinary commercial oxidation and sizing procedures. Analysis of the experimental results is made both in terms of conventional approaches to viscoelastic behaviour and of the power-law analysis of the glass transition in an attempt to obtain suitable parameters for the evaluation of the effects of surface treatment.

Abstract  The level of genetic diversity and the population genetic structure of sorghum landraces from North-western Morocco have been investigated based on direct field-sampling using both allozyme and microsatellite markers. As expected, microsatellite markers showed a much higher degree of polymorphism than allozymes, but relative measures of genetic structure such as Wright’s inbreeding coefficient F IS and Nei’s coefficient of genetic differentiation G ST were similar for the two sets of markers. Substantial inbreeding was found to occur within fields, which confirms that sorghum is predominantly selfing under cultivation. Most of the genetic diversity in Moroccan landraces occurs within fields (more than 85%), as opposed to among fields or among regions, a result which contrasts to those of studies based on accessions from germplasm collections. It is suggested that individual fields of sorghum constitute valuable units of conservation in the context of in situ conservation practices.

Abstract Variation at six polymorphic enzymatic loci was studied in 50 populations of the selfing annualPolygonum aviculare from Belgium. The results show that theP. aviculare complex has an allopolyploid origin and comprises two main genetic entities, viz.P. aviculare subsp.depressum (2n = 4x = 40), restricted to urban sites subject to trampling stress, andP. aviculare subsp.aviculare (2n = 4x = 40, 2n = 6x = 60), with a wider ecological amplitude. The latter had a higher genetic diversity and a higher frequency of fixed heterozygosity than the former. WithinP. aviculare subsp.aviculare, genetic diversity and ecological amplitude correlated positively with ploidy level. Additionally, stronger genetic differentiation among and lower variation within populations was found in urban areas than in cultivated fields.

    Notes:
Abstract 16 morphological characters were assessed in 300 plants sampled from 27 populations ofPolygonum aviculare sensu lato representative of the whole ecological range of the species in Belgium. The three multivariate treatments performed, namely principal component analysis, cluster analysis and discriminant analysis provide evidence thatP. aviculare can be divided in 4 units, roughly corresponding to the four taxa recognized byChrtek. However, the results point out that subsp.monspeliense and subsp.calcatum should be included at the varietal rank within respectively subsp.aviculare (=P. heterophyllum) and subsp.aequale (=P. arenastrum) as defined byLindman. Fruit dimensions, fruit shape and tepal length are the most discriminant characters for separating the four taxa, while several other characters are discriminant at the population level only. The evolutionary significance of the variation pattern of the whole complex is discussed in terms of life history differentiation and ecological specialization.

    Notes:
Abstract: We addressed the clinical significance of antiproteinase 3 (anti-PR3) antibody (Ab) positivity by reviewing the files of 79 patients whose serum contained antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies with a cytoplasmic staining pattern (cANCA) and had been tested for anti-PR3 reactivity. Vasculitis was present in most (22/35) cANCA+ PR3+ patients but in only a few (5/44) cANCA+ PR3+ patients, thereby suggesting that anti-PR3 Ab positivity in cANCA+ patients is more indicative of vasculitis than cANCA positivity alone. Noteworthy, one-third of cANCA+ PR3+ patients – those with anti-PR3 Ab titres lower than 100 U/ml – did not suffer from vasculitis. Anti-PR3 reactivity in vasculitis patients was only weakly associated with Wegener’s granulomatosis (WG), as nine out of 22 cANCA+ PR3+ vasculitis patients (41%) did not fulfil the ACR classification criteria for WG. There was no correlation between anti-PR3 Ab titres and disease activity at diagnosis. However, titres measured when patients were in remission were much lower than initial values. Taken together, our results indicate that anti-PR3 Ab positivity should be interpreted in its clinical context.
