Abstract The neurogenic myopathy of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is degeneration of anterior horn cells of the spinal cord and associated muscle weakness. In three patients with the severe type, according to Dubowitz's classification, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lower extremity showed severe atrophy of the entire muscle bundles of the thigh and the calf. Nine intermediate type patients had ragged atrophy of muscle bundles of the thigh and the calf with selective preservation of adductor longus muscle. Five patients with the mild type had fatty infiltration of muscle bundles and increased intermuscular fat planes. MRI was insufficient for the evaluation of cervical cord abnormalities. MRI of the lower extremity was a reliable complementary modality for the diagnosis and follow-up of SMA patients.

Abstract The report involves a study of the microstructure of tensile, impact and three-point bending samples of aluminum alloy/SiC(p) composites produced by die casting. The results show that in impact samples, 80 μm SiC particulates cluster along the left and right edges of the section vertical plane with the notch plane, and near the notch. In tensile and three-point bending samples, they were distributed uniformly in the matrix. Furthermore, porosities occurred near the notch in the impact samples. The 80 μm SiC particulates will undergo settling in the shot biscuit. There exist arc and irregular shapes in the clustering section of the particulate. The dendrite arm spacing (DAS) is larger in this section. From the shot biscuit to the bending section of the sprue; the quantity of SiC particulate is less. The SiC particulate is clustered in the protrusive region where the injector pins are situated. We can decrease the porosity of die casting samples effectively by designing the overflow well in a wave shape. We can prevent the melt from adhering to the surface of the mold cavity, thermal cracking on the surface of die casting samples and wear on plungers using electroless nickel plating on the SiC particulate.

Abstract The analysis of tin in biological materials is rarely reported. In this study, instrumental neutron activation analysis was used to determine the tin together with some other trace elements in various organs of rats treated with trialkyltin-methacrylic copolymer. No appreciable accumulation of tin and variation of distribution of trace elements (Cr, Fe, Zn and Co) in various organs are found. The pathological changes in the liver sections cannot be observed either. This therefore indicates that the toxicity of trialkyltin-methacrylic copolymer is low, if any.

Abstract Five kinds of urinary stones from 42 patients have been determined for a total of 19 elements by instrumental neutron activation analysis. Of these elements, Ca, Mg, Sr, Na, and Cl are found to be present in the core of all kinds of stones. The differences in elemental composition among the different kinds of stones as well as across the layers of stone are statistically evaluated.
