Routine bacterial culture of abscess pus was reported as ‘sterile’ after 48 h, leading to the suspicion of a mycobacterial infection. Skin biopsy taken for mycobacterial microscopy and culture isolated a heavy growth of Mycobacterium abscessus.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The effects of surgical menopause on lipoprotein levels and their dme course were studied in 31 premenopausal women who were undergoing hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy for non-malignant conditions. Lipoprotein levels were measured beforc oophorectomy and afterwards at 6 and 12 weeks, then at intervals of 3 months for 18 months. Low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels rose significantly (P〈0.05) in the 6 weeks after operation from a mean of 3.57 (SD 0.66) mmol/1 to 4.21 (SD 0.84) mmol/1 with no significant changes thereafter. There were no significant changes in cholesterol in the other density fractions or in triglyceride levels. High density lipoprotein (HDL) subfractions were measured in 10 of the women to assess any change in the relative amounts of cholesterol carried on HDL2 and HDL3, since the protective effect of HDL is believed to be conferred by the HDL2 fraction only. No significant change was found in either fraction. The increase in LDL cholesterol would be expected to result in an appreciable increase in the risk of developing coronary heart disease, but cannot wholly account for the increase in cardiovascular disease associated with oophorectomy.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2559Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: We have previously shown that a range of anti-epithelial membrane antigen monoclonal antibodies show immunoreactivity with the perineurial fibroblast, both in normal nerves and within a range of common peripheral nerve tumours. We have extended these observations by studying a further collection of peripheral nerve lesions, including some which have previously been thought to have an origin from the perineurial cell. The results provide further evidence that these antibodies reliably stain perineurial cells and that in conjunction with antisera to S-100 protein and neurofilaments, the relative contributions of the perineurial fibroblast, Schwann cell and neurone can be assessed within a nerve-related tumour/lesion. The perineurial fibroblast is an important component of some peripheral nerve lesions.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2559Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Giant cell fibroblastoma is an uncommon, benign tumour of soft tissue which was first described in 1982. Thirty-five cases have been previously published. Six new cases are reported herein, which have also been examined immunohistochemically for the expression of vimentin, desmin, myoglobin, S-100 protein, neurofilaments, Factor VIII related antigen and binding of the lectin Ulex europaeus. The previous literature has been reviewed. Giant cell fibroblastoma most often presents in early childhood as a slowly growing, infiltrative subcutaneous mass at a wide variety of sites. It shows a predilection for males and may recur locally in up to 50% of cases. The very distinctive histological features, characterized by so-called solid and angiectoid areas, are presented. The tumour cells were vimentin positive but negative for all other markers used. In particular, there was no evidence of endothelial differentiation. The histogenesis of this unusual tumour is discussed in the light of previous ultrastructural findings.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1988Staff ViewISSN: 1365-2559Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: The pigmented neuroectodermal tumour of infancy is a rare neoplasm of uncertain histogenesis which, in the majority of cases, arises in the maxilla and pursues a benign course. Currently, it would be classified in the group of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumours. Histologically it is composed of two principal cell types: neuro-blast-like and melanocyte-like. Three typical cases are presented herein, which appear to be the first examined with a panel of antibodies. The neuroblast-like cells labelled positively for neurone-specific enolase but were negative for S-100, neurofilaments, glial fibrillary acidic protein, vimentin, cytokeratin, epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). The melanocyte-like cells stained positively for neurone-specific enolase, vimentin and cytokeratin but were negative for S-100, neurofilaments, glial fibrillary acidic protein, EMA and CEA. The significance of these findings is discussed in the light of previous suggestions about the differentiation that these tumours show.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2559Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Neural tumours composed solely of Pacinian corpuscles or showing focal Pacinian differentiation are extremely rare and have only occasionally been reported in the literature. All such lesions to date have been benign. Three lesions are described herein which presented as painful digital masses in middle-aged adults and which were composed of abnormal aggregates of morphologically mature Pacinian corpuscles and intervening small nerves. Only five similar cases have been previously recorded. Possible pathogenetic mechanisms of this unusual hyperplastic phenomenon are discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The clinical features and histopathological appearances are described. Immunohistochemical staining of thirteen cases with antisera to lysozyme, α1-antichymotrypsin and S-100 protein has provided no evidence to support either a histiocytic or neuroectodermal origin for these tumours. In reviewing the literature, the histogenetic origin, differential diagnosis and malignant potential of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans are discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1984Staff ViewISSN: 1365-2559Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: The incidence of tissue eosinophilia in keratoacanthoma and in early and late cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin has been studied. Eosinophil infiltration of over 10 cells per high power field was found in 80 cases, and was not related to the size, site or aetiology of the lesions in which it was present. In cases where diagnostic difficulty arises between keratoacanthoma and well differentiated, keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma, if tissue eosinophilia is present the lesion is more likely to be malignant. Though in isolation the finding of an eosinophil infiltrate is not diagnostic it should be added to the list of criteria which help to distinguish these lesions. The pattern of tissue eosinophilia in late cases of squamous cell carcinoma was more extensive and there were two cases which showed massive tumour-associated tissue eosinophilia. This has previously been reported in squamous cell carcinoma at other sites, and may be related to the production of an eosinophilochemotactic factor.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
