It is demonstrated that the frequency spectrum of femtosecond pulses becomes highly asymmetric when propagating as transverse magnetic modes in semiconductor multiple quantum well channel waveguides at photon energies near half the band gap. Calculations based on the frequency dispersion in two-photon transitions provide results consistent with the experiment.

The wavelength dependence of the nonlinear refractive index and two-photon absorption coefficient near half the band gap was measured in an AlGaAs waveguide. The two photon figure of merit for efficient nonlinear optics in AlGaAs is shown to be quite favorable for photon energies less than one half the band gap.

Efficient nonlinear or power-dependent polarization switching in a semiconductor quantum-well amplifier is reported. In the experiment, an amplifier with an InGaAs/GaAs single quantum well structure which lases at 974 nm is used. Efficient self-switching is observed at 940 nm with signals 3 psec wide when gain and absorption saturation occur in the TM and TE polarization modes, respectively. The switching peak intensity is estimated to be lower than 13.2 MW/cm2. A theoretical model is adopted to show the consistent trends of switching behaviors with the experimental data. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Efficient ultrafast all-optical switching in nonlinear directional couplers made of AlGaAs and AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wells near half the band gap is reported. The switching is limited by multiphoton absorption which is dominated by three-photon absorption in this spectral range. The three-photon absorption in the quantum well nonlinear directional coupler is stronger than that of bulk AlGaAs. Autocorrelations of the output pulses in the bar and cross states confirm pulse breakup through nonlinear coupling, and illustrate the effects of multiphoton absorption. All sets of experimental data are fitted well by a theoretical model.

We report the study results of an InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well structure with a nominal indium content of 25%. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction show clear indium aggregation and phase separation. Stimulated emission data always show two major peaks in spectrum. The long- (short-) wavelength peak is assigned to the recombination of localized state carriers (free carriers). At low temperatures or optical pump levels, the localized-state recombination dominates the stimulated emission; however, at high temperatures or pump levels, the free-carrier recombination becomes dominant. The peak position corresponding to localized states changes little in spectrum as temperature or pump level varies. This result is attributed to carrier overflow, strain relaxation, and carrier shielding in increasing temperature or carrier supply. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

A computer model was developed to predict changes in the gaseous environment (O2 and CO2 concentration) of ripening tomatoes packaged in polymeric bags for a long period of storage. The gas model was then combined with the color development model derived by the authors in a separate study to yield an integrated model. The integrated model was validated for two different weights of tomatoes at the “turning” color stage and stored in two types of films.

To evaluate Helicobacter pylori primary resistance and its clinical impact on the efficacy of two lansoprazole-based eradication triple therapies.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods: H. pylori-positive patients (n=228) were randomized to receive one of the 1-week regimens: lansoprazole 30 mg, clarithromycin 500 mg and amoxicillin 1 g (LAC), or lansoprazole 30 mg, clarithromycin 500 mg and metronidazole 500 mg (LMC), each given twice daily. H. pylori status was assessed by 13C-urea breath test and culture at diagnosis and by 13C-urea breath test 6 weeks after therapy. Antibiotic susceptibility was determined by E-test (n=98).〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:The eradication rates with per protocol/ intention-to-treat analyses were: LAC (n=95/114) 83%/69% and LMC (n=96/114) 85%/72%. Primary resistance was 11% for clarithromycin, 41% for metronidazole and 0% for amoxicillin. Eradication in metronidazole-susceptible/-resistant strains was 85%/82% in LAC and 83%/63% in LMC. Significantly lower cure rates were observed in clarithromycin-resistant patients treated with LAC (95% vs. 0%, P 〈 0.001) and LMC (86% vs. 0%, P 〈 0.001).〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:One-week LAC and LMC are similarly effective therapies. Clarithromycin resistance significantly affected H. pylori eradication in both regimens.

Background  Depigmented extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) has been reported in a few cases. Depigmented macules or patches may be the only presenting sign or may coexist with the classical erythematous lesions. Objectives  To investigate the occurrence rate and clinical presentation of depigmentation in EMPD.Methods  All pathology-proven cases of EMPD diagnosed in our department during 1990–2003 were retrieved. The clinical photographs were reviewed for evidence of local depigmentation. The pathological diagnosis of EMPD in the whitish lesions was confirmed by positive expression of cytokeratin 7 or carcinoembryonic antigen, and/or the presence of intracytoplasmic mucin. Results  Of 19 cases of EMPD, six (30%) manifested depigmented lesions which were confirmed to be EMPD pathologically. In two patients, the hypopigmentation was associated with erythematous lesions at the initial presentation. In four others, the depigmentation developed later as local recurrence after excision, cryotherapy, photodynamic therapy or radiotherapy. The progressive enlargement of the depigmentation and the appearance of separate new white lesions in these four cases suggested that the localized depigmentation was unlikely to be simple postinflammatory hypopigmentation. Conclusions  Our study suggests that depigmented EMPD may not be rare. Localized depigmentation in the genital area can be an early sign of EMPD and its local recurrence. In patients with an established diagnosis of EMPD, appearance of new white lesions and continuous enlargement of depigmented patches should not be dismissed as simple treatment-induced postinflammatory hypopigmentation or another type of hypopigmented lesion without biopsy confirmation.
