Publication Date: 2023-01-23Description: Increasing energy efficiency is a key global policy goal for climate protection. An important step toward an optimal reduction of energy consumption is the identification of energy saving potentials in different sectors and the best strategies for increasing efficiency. This paper analyzes these potentials in the household sector by estimating the degree of inefficiency in the use of electricity and its determinants. Using stochastic frontier analysis and disaggregated household data, we estimate an input requirement function and inefficiency on a sample of 2000 German households. Our results suggest that the mean inefficiency amounts to around 20%, indicating a notable potential for energy savings. Moreover, we find that household size and income are among the main determinants of individual inefficiency. This information can be used to increase the cost-efficiency of programs aimed to enhance energy efficiency. Keywords: Ökologie ; Ecology ; Mikrozensus 2013; stochastic frontier analysis; technical efficiency ; Ökologie und Umwelt ; Ecology, Environment ; Mikrozensus ; Energieverbrauch ; Elektrizität ; Privathaushalt ; Stochastik ; Effizienzanalyse ; Klimaschutz ; Energieeinsparung ; Bundesrepublik Deutschland ; microcensus ; energy consumption ; electricity ; private household ; stochastics ; efficiency analysis ; climate protection ; energy saving ; Federal Republic of GermanyType: Zeitschriftenartikel, journal article -

Publication Date: 2023-07-27Description: This text is based on the presentation at the roundtable in memory of Teodor Shanin (Moscow, 23 October 2020) and on the recent author's paper in press, which surveys Shanin's work of the 1970s and 1980s. The author provides a guide to tracing Shanin'’s main themes and issues. First, the family farm is usually if not invariably featured first in Shanin's characterizations of peasants as a general or generic type. Second, Shanin sought explanations of peasant household reproduction in his model of 'multidirectional and cyclical mobility' against the 'biological determinism' linked to the organization-production school and against the 'economic determinism' of Marxists. Third, Shanin emphasized "life of a small community within which most of the peasant needs of social living and social reproduction can be met", but he aimed to avoid a romantic view of the mir. Fourth, Shanin believed that "the definitions of peasantry, which view it as representing an aspect of the past surviving in the modern world, seem, on the whole, valid", and that rural society can be understood in terms of labour and capital flows which are broader than agriculture. Fifth, Shanin wrote that the triple origins of Marx's analytical thought suggested by Engels - German philosophy, French socialism and British political economy - should be supplemented by the Russian revolutionary populism. Sixth, Shanin argued that the concept of 'peasant mode of production' had too many heuristic limitations to be sustained. Finally, Shanin's vision of an alternative to both capitalist development and the projects of Soviet style was firmly rooted in the legacy of Chayanov. Keywords: Geschichte ; History ; Shanin; Chayanov; Peasant economy; Organization-production school; Populist; Peasantry; Peasant mode of production ; Landwirtschaft ; Bauer ; Produktionsweise ; Familienbetrieb ; Wirtschaftssystem ; UdSSR ; Russland ; agriculture ; peasant ; mode of production ; family business ; economic system ; USSR ; Russia ; 10500Type: Zeitschriftenartikel, journal article -

Publication Date: 2024-07-29Description: Sports journalists can act as agents of change in society since they have a unique and powerful platform to influence public opinion, raise awareness, advocate for various issues through their reporting and commentary, and overall promote positive change in society. This is perhaps more obvious when looking at recent research from the Nordic countries. However, are sports journalists able to be, and do they even wish to be, agents of change in countries such as Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Germany, and Israel? Based on academic writing and interviews with media and sports scholars, this article examines the academic discourse that tries to assess to what extent sports journalism may be professionalized in a select number of countries in the European Union and the Middle East. Respondents were asked to speak about how they, as academics, perceived the extent to which sports journalists in each country have substantial autonomy from the economic and political systems and to what extent they are agents of change in their country. Keywords: Publizistische Medien, Journalismus,Verlagswesen ; News media, journalism, publishing ; Nordic model; academic discourse; agents of change; international perspective; sports journalism ; Kommunikatorforschung, Journalismus ; Communicator Research, Journalism ; Journalismus ; Sport ; sozialer Wandel ; Professionalisierung ; öffentliche Meinung ; EU ; Nahost ; Autonomie ; journalism ; sports ; social change ; professionalization ; public opinion ; Middle East ; autonomyType: Zeitschriftenartikel, journal article -

This study was performed to identify predictors of cocaine non-disclosure among individuals who self-reported heroin use during a medical care encounter.Design A prospective comparison of self-report of cocaine use among heroin users and hair analysis for cocaine.Setting Four health-care clinics at an academic, inner-city hospital.Participants Patients presenting for a health-care visit who were willing to self-report use of heroin and were not engaged in any form of drug treatment.Measurements (1) Self-report using standardized instruments: the Drug Addiction Severity Test (DAST), the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) and quantity/frequency questions for heroin and cocaine use. (2) Biochemical evidence: analysis of hair by radioimmunoassay (RIA) for cocaine and opiate levels.Findings Among 336 heroin users who tested positive for cocaine in hair, 34.2% did not report their recent cocaine use. The mean cocaine level for discordant individuals was significantly lower than for concordant individuals (109.6 ng/10 mg versus 470.57 ng/10 mg; P 〈 0.0001). Multivariate predictors of disclosure included opiate and cocaine levels in hair and the ASI drug severity subscore. Conclusions Although self-report has been validated for treatment system patients, almost a third of the out-of-treatment heroin users in this medical clinic study failed to disclose concomitant cocaine use. The likelihood of non-disclosure was greatest for heavy users of heroin and light users of cocaine. Confirmation of self-report with biochemical analysis in the medical setting may be necessary to improve both clinical care and research validity.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-0891Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Political ScienceEconomicsNotes: Abstract The utilization of quantitative methods in urban analysis is a complicated endeavor faced with many serious problems. The purpose of this paper is to inventory and explain the problems and pitfalls in their utilization. Three types of problems are catalogued: conceptual/technical, administrative and societal. Within the first two categories, the problems are further dimensioned as either analytical or decisional in nature. The place of quantitative methods in urban analysis is discussed first. Problems and pitfalls are then defined, catalogued and ordered sequentially as they confront the urban analyst and policy-maker. An assessment of quantitative methods in urban policy-making is presented and the organizational factors necessary for implementing successful quantitative urban analysis programs indicated. Throughout a general perspective is maintained and specific examples are employed to punctuate general propositions.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
