Median age of dogs was 5 years (range 2–6 years). All dogs had positive titers for Leptospira bratislava. Median duration of PD was 4 days (range 3–16 days). PD resulted in a decrease in azotemia in all dogs. Median serum blood urea nitrogen at the start of PD was 192 mg/dL (range 140–235 mg/dL) and at the end of PD was 63 mg/dL (range 48–139 mg/dL). Median serum creatinine at the start of PD and the end was 12.8 mg/dL (range 7.7–16.9 mg/dL) and 3.4 mg/dL (range 1.4–11.1 mg/dL), respectively. Complications identified during PD included hypokalemia (n=3, 60%), hypoalbuminemia (n=2, 40%), hypomagnesemia (n=1, 20%), pelvic limb edema (n=2, 40%), central nervous system signs (n=2, 40%), dialysate retention (n=1, 20%), and leakage from the catheter site (n=1, 20%). Peritonitis was not identified in any of the dogs. Four dogs (80%) survived to discharge from the hospital. PD was effective for management of uremia in dogs with ARF caused by leptospirosis.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

In this study, we investigated the functional significance of this interaction by overexpression of human HuD protein (pcHuD) or its truncated form lacking the third RRM (pcHuD I+II) in PC12 cells. Morphological analysis revealed that pcHuD cells extended short neurites containing GAP-43-positive growth cones in the absence of nerve growth factor (NGF). These processes also contained tubulin and F-actin filaments but were not stained with antibodies against neurofilament M protein. In correlation with this phenotype, pcHuD cells contained higher levels of GAP-43 without changes in levels of other NGF-induced proteins, such as SNAP-25 and tau. In mRNA decay studies, HuD stabilized the GAP-43 mRNA, whereas HuD I+II did not have any effect either on GAP-43 mRNA stability or on the levels of GAP-43 protein. Likewise, pcHuD I+II cells showed no spontaneous neurite outgrowth and deficient outgrowth in response to NGF. Our results indicate that HuD is sufficient to increase GAP-43 gene expression and neurite outgrowth in the absence of NGF and that the third RRM in the protein is critical for this function.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1996Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7690Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsChemistry and PharmacologyNotes: Spectroscopic properties are determined for the six bound electronic states of H+2 that correlate as nuclear separation R → ∞ with a proton and a hydrogen atom in an n=3 state. Two antibonding orbitals 5gπg and 6hσu have significant potential wells and an infinite number of bound vibrational states due to strongly attractive pole–dipole leading multipole terms. Vibrational–rotational eigenenergies are reported for three angular momentum J values for each bound state. Coefficients up to a6 are listed for Dunham power-series expansions of the vibrational potentials V(R) about the equilibrium separations Re. The higher a coefficients come almost entirely from the nuclear Coulomb repulsion only for the 3dδg state, the one state that is lowest of its symmetry type and is therefore not perturbed from below. Dunham Yij are determined also; the leading vibrational Y10, rotational Y01, and anharmonicity ||Y20|| constants are very small due to the very broad potential wells and large values of Re for all six n=3 electronic states. For five of the six states, Y00 is negative and therefore the vibrational quantum number ve at the potential minimum is (approximately-greater-than)−1/2. The wavelength range of the bound–bound (n=3)↔(n=2)H+2 transitions is 3800–9700 A(ring); many unidentified diffuse interstellar bands have been reported in this range. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The effects of time, initial pH and molar ratio of arginine to xylose on the yield of antioxidative activity were investigated. The best results were obtained by refluxing 1M arginine HCl with 1M xylose in water at 100°C for 10–20 hr at an initial pH of 5. The use of 1:1 pyridine/water reaction medium produced a twofold increase in activity suggesting the role of a base catalyst for the production of maximum yields.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
